I was wondering what a vegan would pair a red wine with. For example, pinot noir is a perfect pairing for filet mignon...

I was just curious cuz many reds are just dying to be paired with some sort of red meat product.

Anything in a tomato basil, Italian style red sauce goes well with chianti or sangiovese... like eggplant parmesan or spaghetti marinara or cheese pizza... and Lambruscos go with some of the same dishes. Soy cheeses can be used to replace dairy products in these dishes.

Pinot also goes will with grilled vegetables...

I have a couple of Vegan friends and when I have them over for Dinner, I usually use the Red wine I want to serve with the meal as a cooking ingredient. Using the wine in the dish helps make the wine and the food more complimentary to each other. They also have no problem sipping on a glass or two of wine during the conversation after the meal.

If the Vegan consumes dairy products like cheese then thee are several good choices.. big hearty red wines like Cabernet Savignon, and Pinot Noir are great with strong cheese like aged cheddar and blue cheese like Stilton, Gorgonzola, and Roquefort, Also a good crusty and heavy bread brushed with olive oil and garlic or olive oil and you favorite red sauce , or pesto work very well.

All I know is that vegetarians would pair the consumption of any good alcoholic beverage with a stonking good time, regardless of the food in front of them.
Good wine needs no excuse and good food need not be 'complimented' with wine, just appreciation...

Good question. I can't answer it, as I'm not a vegan. But I suppose some people can enjoy a good wine without tearing juicy flesh from bloodied bones.

Since reds are usually paired with meats I would suggest grilled portabello mushrooms.

a lot of people like red wine w/ chocolate cake. they go really well together. I worked at a costco, in sonoma county(wine country) california, and people always come in for wine and tell me that they enjoyed drinking it with chocolate cake

Anything that's dark and/or has a particularly strong flavor can be served with red wine. Particularly with tomato based sauces.
