I don't feel it's true that it matters less the older you get. I am well over 40, and it still matters to me---as long as a couple of key people remember my birthday. Everyone doesn't have to acknowledge it, just those I care about the most. My mother ALWAYS remembered our birthdays; maybe that's why I think it's relevant. The actual ritual isn't so much important as you grow older, but remembering it and acknowledging it is.
You could look at it this way: the older one gets the more important birthdays might be because you are looking forward to LESS of them.

Happy Belated Birthday. No you are right to feel rotten, my family and husband all still give me presents and cards, there is no excuse for you parents to not at least give you a card and l would expect more than that from my husband, you should really make him feel guilty for not getting you anything, let him know you are very upset, so next year he can plan something for you. I would be really upset if this happened to me. Poor you. Go out with some friends and make up for it.

They did not forget. But you wanted more acknowledgement. How has this changed from how you celebrated in past years or how does your family celebrate others birthday. If you don't know of any problems you are having with you family right now...you could say... to them...that even though you are grown up...you like birthday celebrations and can we eat dinner together this weekend? However, since you are 28 be sure you take time to acknowledge your parents/siblings etc birthdays. Not fair to stay the little kid and expect something when you do not do the same!

It's strange, but when you get older, you'll want people to forget your birthday! Be happy you still feel this way, because in a few more years you will feel totally different. Whats the problem anyway? Birthday's, and parties are for children aren't they? You need to grow up, and realize that once you get past 21 time takes off so fast, and the bummer is; do we really need to be reminded we are getting old? In my heart, getting old hurts!

i it's okay to feel rotten
i know how do you feel I'm far away from my home and my 16 birthday has past with nothing
show them that you don't care and the most important things to you that they remembered your birthday be happy for having your family around you in your birthday and when their birthday come give them a gift and they will remember yours
by the way " HAPPY BIRTHDAY sweet heart "

Many happy returns.Hope you have a great year. I'd feel more than rotten.I'm not a little kid,but I'd be tempted to throw a tantrum or 2. Tell them how hurt you feel that no one wanted to celebrate the date you were born. I wonder if they'd be so accepting if you ignored their birthdays? I'm with you on this one, stuff everyone who dis-agreed.Buy yourself something nice and make your husband pay for it.

Wouldn't care at all, after 30 a birthday is a non-entity
Ive seen more answers now and think its funny the differance in opinion between women and men. My wife forgets noones birthday! I think its great for kids, But I see no nostalgia in my own birthday, and know alot of men that feel the same, just another day.

Happy Birthday!
Well if they did not intentianally hurt you then try not to feel too bad. If you know they love you then really you don't need gifts and cards. However, you might let them know that you still cling onto these "cake" and celebration traditions...maybe they think you have outgrown them. In fact, I don't care if people forget my birthday...I hope that they do...but that is just me.
