Any good method takes time and patience. If you mean house training.....the first thing to remember about house training a puppy is there ability to hold themselves is limited. a rule of thumb is they can hold "it" usually 1 hour for each month of age. 2 months old = 2 hours, 3 months old = 3 hours, etc. when your puppy wakes up (morning, nap, whatever) the pup has to go, right then! take the pup out. when the pup eats or drinks, it has to go, take the pup out. after exercise (play), take the pup out. when the pup does it's thing outside praise it. a lot. tell the pup how good, how smart it is. you have to pay attention to the pups "looking for it's spot" behavior. when you see that behavior indoors, whisk the pup out. if you catch the pup in the act, simply tell it "NO!" and whisk it outside. if you find a puddle or pile after the fact, clean it up with an enzyme cleaner (pet food store) get a newspaper and hit.... yourself in the head and say "i should have been paying more attention" daytime training they get pretty fast. night time training is easier if you crate train the pup. also remember the one hour/one month rule. you will have to get up through the night to take the pup out. good luck

If you mean obedience training, go to obedience classes. They teach you how to train your dog.

There is no fast quick easy way to train any dog. Repetition and persistance is the only way.

Your dogs age is also a major factor, for it is still only a puppy and our expectations can be waaaay too high. Just imagine a small child about the age of 5 being on the same level, would you expect that child to know all and everything of what is expected of someone the age of 12. Impossible, for there is much to learn.

Your puppy is still learning, if you cram in too much too soon all you will have is a very confused puppy, neither doing the right or wrong thing as to what you want.

As a responsible breeder myself, I would ask, what do you expect your 5 month old puppy to perform for you?
At this age I would only expect basic toilet training, sit, stay and maybe fetch at a push. Nipping, pulling clothes off the line and chewing everything in sight, oh and the occassional accident in the house would naturally still be expected.

Summing up, your patience is probably lacking more than your puppies training. Be persistant and wait, it will pay off in the end. At 1 year your training will be rewarded with the dog you are seeking now, but is too young to live up to your expectations.

I,ve owned shepherds all my life . In my belief they are the smartest dogs out there!the key is repatition . Keep a firm routine , with a firm but loving hand . I used treats and whenever she did something right i,d give a treat and make a huge deal of it . That was ALL it took! As far as training him/her in the yard ... i put mine on a leash and walked the property line everyday 2 times a day .. after she knew her boundry i knew she could be trusted and she felt proud . Then i,d bring her in and give her a treat and tons of praise . My dog is now 8 yrs old and has never left the property and is never tied up . WE have dogs all around us too , i also think and believe strongly that socialisation is a must ! When u go for walks , don,t shy away from other dogs , or pull back ., the dog will interprit that as not being allowed to go near other dogs and want to run away to do it . all in all , if u are consistant , u should have a good dog , but remember ....U R THE BOSS NOT HIM/HER!!!!!

It just takes persistance.Remember the dog will only be as good and as smart as the time YOU put into him.
You have a trainer-what good is that if you're not following up on practicing with him at home?
Training is a bonding experience.Your dog is bonding with his trainer and not you.So he's not going to perform for you.You also must be aware that you have to be consistant in giving commands. They have to be given in same manner and tone trainer uses otherwise dog is confused. If trainer says sit and moves hand from the dogs nose to top of his head holding a treat,it will not do for you to hold treat above the dogs head and say go sit over there. The dog has no clue what you want of him he just sees a treat and wants it.
You should be working WITH your trainer and spending a few minutes several times a day practicing whats been taught to the dog.If you'll do this you should see vast improvement within a matter of a couple of days.
I bought my first German Shepherd at 12 wks of age.The first thing he learned was his boundaries in the yard. The second thing he learned was STOP.Then he learned what the leash was and how to walk on it before we did sit, stay, lay down and speak. He had mastered every command by the 3rd or 4th time he'd heard it.We both worked all day but he'd learned quickly in the time we had to spend with him and by 18wks of age he was acting like a little gentleman instead of a heathen when commanded. We mixed training with play and made it fun for him to learn.
Also it needs to be said that you have got to take your dog for a run not a walk before training sessions. He has alot of excess energy he needs to get rid of so he can keep his mind on the task at hand.During training be firm but not aggressive. If dog starts acting anxious or confused stop and play for awhile then go back to your learning session. And always try to end sessions as soon as dog correctly does whatevers asked of him if possible. If the dog continually acts disinterested or confused try using a different method to get theru to him.Do not give up.Remember that your dog thinks in pictures not words. You have to show him whats expected not just tell him.
After he's successfully completed training he still needs to be continually reminded of his commands.Otherwise he'll see that you don't care what he does so soon he'll be chewing upholstry and going potty all over the place. So expect him to test you repeatedly. He's just checking to see if you're paying attention.
Now I'm not sure exactly what training you're talking about but common sense tells me that no matter what you're trying to get your dog to accomplish if you follow my advice everyone will be much happier.

First, don't confuse lack of training with just being a puppy. You have been given some very good answers here so following that advice will help immensely.
German Shepherds ARE highly intelligent; almost too smart for most people who do not know how to train them. Persistence and consistency is the utmost priority in training your puppy and like it was mentioned earlier, keep it fairly simple but consistent. If you make your pup sit before going outside or being fed, make sure you do it every time. Your pup will remember the ONE time you did not make him listen to get something and will push you to test his limits with you. If you do not come across as a competent and strong leader, your pup WILL try to take this position. That is why it is essential to teach basic manners and expect them to 'listen' each and every time you request something from them. teaching your pup sit, down, walking on a leash and come are the essentials at this age and can be implemented in all daily activities with your pup. Making him do these several times a day in short sessions will reinforce it strongly and your pup will become almost automatic in what to do. From these basics you can gradually move on to stay, heel, and other commands. Once a pup knows sit and down without hesitation, it's easier to teach the other commands you want/need him to learn. It's safer for your pup too; if he listens to you consistently , it can save him from harm/injury in certain situations that you need him to respond quickly. Again, consistency is the key. If your trainer does not appear to be making any progress, you either need a new trainer or you need to have the trainer teach YOU how to train your pup so you are both using the same methods. Training your pup also creates a bond between you. You dont' want him seeing his trainer as his alpha, you want him to see YOU as his alpha and obey your commands without hesitation or coaxing. Good luck and if you just have patience and are consistent, you will have a well behaved and well adjusted dog. On a side note, NEVER hit or punish your dog...positive reinforcement is the BEST training method for a pup/dog. This creates less stress, frustration and encourages your dog to want to please you.

There is no fast and easy way to train a dog. You need to spend time and be as smart or smarter than the dog. German Shepard's are an intelligent breed in general. don't cheat the dog on obedience training. Do it right and take him to class. And be patient

house, obedience, or show training?

rewards (treats, extra praise) and repitition for any of the above.

German shepards are wicked smart. Once he figures out what you're doing and knows what he's getting in return, he'll catch on quick and he'll be a great dog.

I have a dog training school, we also run residential dog training lessons. At 5months he/she is probably a bit young for "serious" training but it all depends on what you want to teach him/her and to what standard.

Persistance and Fun ... make it all a game .. im sure he/she will do just fine!
