Have we really explored every inch of the earth for oil, i think not. We have not even explored all our oceans depths. Would private industry really tell us this? i.e. cigarettes, ford and the firestone tire blunder, enron etc.

Of course they would announce it, withg great fanfare. That will immediately get the value of the oil company's share up in the stock market. In fact, the risk is that some companies might even try to annouce that a discovery is bigger than it really is, so that the executives can get big bonus (and sell their shares at a huge profit).
And, no, the whole planet has not been explored for oil yet. Since drilling is costly, the exploration is done to try to figure out were oil is most likely to be found in places where drilling is cheaper to do. But by doing an extrapolation of where oil has been found, a fairly good estimate of how much undiscovered oil there is in total can be done.

The problem with oil is that supply is starting to run short of demand (even with things like the new gulf discovery).

People don't want to believe that. They want to believe that the problem is some bad guy somewhere. The usual bad guys are evil people in oil companies or environmentalists or politicians.

Then the answer is simple. Just find the bad guy and stop him. Then people won't have to pay more for gas or do anything to change their use of energy.

This is very dangerous. It means that we won't do the right things. It means that no politiciam will propose that we do the right things. The people who bellieve it's just some evil guy somewhere will not accept doing the right things.

The people in oil companies want to make money. But they're not evil and they're not the problem.

We need to conserve energy and develop alternative sources. It will be very hard. As long as people believe it's just evil guys we won't do it.

I doubt that they will. There is more profit to be realized if the general masses are led to believe that there is a limited supply.
