If it is so over all of your nails it is because of nail varnish.
Always use an undercoat in the future, its the only thing that will stop a repeat performance when you get them back to a healthy colour.
I've heard that the tablets that are used for cleaning dentures are fantastic for whitening nails!! Makes sense.

This is an age old problem that can be easy to fix. Here is a simple manicure you can do at home.
1. Make sure you wash your hands with a good antibacterial soap. If you don’t have antibacterial soap at least wash your hands with regular soap. Dry thoroughly. 2. Before you do anything else get an emery board, preferably a nice thick salon type. You can find them in any drug store. Gently and very very lightly file at the yellow stain on your nail. Be very careful not to file past the nail into the delicate under part. It doesn’t take much to get this off,but is often tedious. If your nervous about doing it have it done by a professional. Please make sure that your nail file is clean. 3. After you’ve taken off the yellow apply cuticle cream,if you have it,to your cuticles. If you don’t have cuticle cream a light lotion will do. 4. Next you can gently push your cuticles back with an orange stick(cuticle stick). You can also use the small end of your nail file. If you have a cuticle remover you can then proceed to remove any dead cuticle. A cuticle remover is a two pronged tool, most of them have a special tip at the end for pushing cuticles back. 5. Now your nails are ready for buffing. If you have never buffed your nails your in for a real treat! It will take a few minutes but the results are amazing. Use a little light lotion or hand cream on your hands and work it into your nails. Then start buffing your nails. Nails are rounded on the top surface so buff in that direction. Pretty soon,if you keep it up,yournails will start to have a sheen to them. 6. Now your ready for polish. There are a lot of reasons for your nails turning yellow. A common one is not using a base coat. Base coat goes on first, then one to two coats of your favorite polish. Let dry in between. Followed by a coat of top coat. The top coat can also be clear polish. Granted this may take a while, whos got time to give thierself a manicure? But,at any rate,it is surprisingly relaxing,a great stress buster!
On a more serious note,if your nails are yellow, hurting and sore you should go to a Doctor before doing anything,as you may have an infection and this would greatly aggrevate the condition. Always remember to be gentle with your nails when you are working with them and it is always a good idea to

Hmm it could be due to too much of polishing of the nails and the nail polish has been on the nail for too long... i dont know if you believe it but it does leave a yellowish tint on our nails...

If you don't have any hepatic problems it might be that you use too much and too often a nail polish, let your nails breath and you can try just brushing them often and look for any change if no you can use peroxide, the same one used for the hair discolouration is ok, just with a Q-tip clean the surface then rinse. Good luck

it is either through smoking or colouring nails, need to soak them in lemon juice and not apply varnish for a few weeks as they need to breathe, apply good hand cream, body shop hemp hand creme is good and rub it in to the nails as it will condition them if pitted with white spots lacking in iron eat spinach or drink a mattesons stout.

I was going to suggest nutritional supplements and diet (look to) but, I'm sorry; this just doesn't sound right; I'd be feeling better to advise you to seek a diagnosis, just for peace of mind. (Unless you smoke and they are stained from that??)
