The version of it I am familiar with is that it is just a normal handshake with one difference, the index finger is extended to lay along the inside of the wrist and to give a light tapping. this serves as a distraction to allow the witch to implant a thought

Are you talking about the handshake where you extend your index finger and put it on the other person's pulse point (on their wrist)? I think I read that in a Gardner (?) book years ago and it wasn't a secret handshake per se as much as a way to get people to remember you (i.e. to influence others). But other than that obscure memory of having read that somewhere - I don't recollect a secret witches handshake.

I believe in Scott Cunningham's Guide for the Solitary Practioner he mentioned a handshake that he thought would be nice if we all learned. Of course I've lent that book out and my websearchs are coming up dry, but I believe its just a regular handshake with the index finger extended.

I often thought it would be neat, to know in that moment, if you were in the presence of a fellow witch or not :)

two or more witches get together, generally hold out their right hand and grasp each other and make a mild pumping action while slightly squeezing.
