I ask this because there was a question by Monica Rae and she described the symptoms exactly of kennel cough. We got our dog from the pound and he has all his shots but developed kennel cough. He would get stiff as a board, gasp for breath and that would last for about 20 seconds. It's nothing to worry about. The vet and articles online say to rub the throat and talk calmly to the dog while that's happening. Eventually, it stops but it took about 6 weeks. No vet visit is needed. A lot of dogs get it, even when they have not been in a kennel.

Both my dogs have had kennel cough, at separate times. My older dog got it from a puppy that came from the Humane Society and then a year later my new Lab puppy got from the vet's office (of all places). I was told by the vet once they have it they build an immunity to it and I am assuming it is a correct statement because my older dog never got it when my Lab puppy had it. Kennel Cough is extremely contagious and as I was told you neighbors dog up the street could get it and if your dog is down wind he could also get it. Your heart breaks when you dog is going thru it and there is nothing you really can do, but let it run its course.

Kennel Cough is a self limiting disease, of which most otherwise healthy dogs will get over in a couple of weeks. This knowledge is available on the net. The vaccination for it is only good for 6 or 7 months according to the duration of immunity studies.
The vaccine only covers a few of the many strains of Kennel Cough.
I brought home 2 rescue puppies. The developed Kennel Cough and were taken to the vet for antibiotics. My own 2 dogs developed Kennel Cough and did not receive antibiotics. Everyone got over the Kennel Cough about the same time.
Years later, I got another puppy who picked up Kennel Cough at a rescue event. He did not get antibiotics and got over it in a couple of weeks. My now older dogs did not get Kennel Cough a second time.

#1 was your dog vaccinated against kennelcough? if he was the vaccination covers some of the strains of the virus and their are many strains. they can get a reactaction from the vaccination. just like the flu shot you can get a small case of the flu.if you have a small dog and on occasion it starts to cough rub under the neck like the vet told you. in small dogs something to do with their windpipe swells up and rubbing their throat helps stop it.I had a peek-a-poo who did it for 16 yrs . as for kennal cough you could be at the vets and the dog next to you may have it, and could pass it to your dog, it's an airborn virus that's why I believe all dogs should be vaccinated against kennelcough.some vets say that once they get it they can't get it again which i am sceptical about that because they may just get another strain of the virus. but I know if left untreated it could be fatel to your dog.

Even if your dog has been vaccinated they can get this. It is like a cold in humans. Easily spread and hard to control.
Your vet can prescribe antibiotics and you should take your pet in and see the vet. This can develope into lung infections and pneumonia.
My Weimaraner got it from a ofster puppy I had. ALl of my dogs get the intra nasal shot for it every six months but he got sick. A trip to the vet and some sulfa and it was gone in a week.

My dog got kennel cough from a groomed. I had to take her to the vet and they put her on antibiotics and cough syrup to prevent secondary infection from raw throat tissue. If not properly treated, kennel cough can develop into pneumonia.

My fiances dog had it so we took her to the vet. The vet prescribed some antibiotics, and they cleared up the kennel cough.

Mine smoked a lot of big cigars while in the kennel, so technically it's not kennel cough, but due to the location.. it is. I told him to lay off and he did. End of story.
