Aubrey is correct. The laws are different state to state. Most states only require a background check, with a waiting period for handguns. In most cases, a permit is only required for concealed carry.

However, some states require a license, like in NJ a Firearms ID Card is required for rifles and shotguns. For handguns, NJ residents have to apply for a permit for each and every handgun they wish to purchase.

Conversely, if I relocate to Pennsylvania, right across the river, I can purchase rifles and shotguns with only a background check, and take them immediately. Handgun purchases can be made with a five day waiting period.

It all depends on the state you live in.

You don't need a license to own either of them.

You must pass a background check through the DOJ before you can pick the firearm up from the dealer and there is also a mandatory waiting period
