Well in the old days, women used to drive slower and more carefully. So for getting in the way and stopping men from being boy racers, we would say you were bad drivers. However these days, I do feel that women are worse drivers, because...
If I'm doing 80 on the motorway, if a small poxy car comes speeding past me at 90, ripping the 1.1 litre engine out of it, it is always a woman.
If I let an oncoming car through, and I don't get any sign of thanks or recognition, it's always a woman.
If a car is illegally blocking a box junction, and the driver sits there refusing to look at me, it's always a woman.
If I'm at a junction, and I want to turn right, and there is queuing traffic left bound, if the next car comes and blocks my route when they could have just as easily left a gap for me to cross, it's always a woman.
If a car goes around a roundabout or an unusual bend and if the lane markings vanish and the car swerves across all lanes because there is no marks to tell them where the lane is, it's always a woman.
If there is a turning lane in a central reservation and a car just pulls into it but leaves it's back end half blocking the outside lane, it's always a woman.
If a car takes more than two attempts to bay park, it's always a woman.
Need I go on?

OK there have been many answers to this but please read this one !
From an insurance point of view the premium is calculated against the cost of claims made by a cohort or group of people with similar indicators.
Insurance companies look at where the claims are comming from and caluclate the premiums accordingly.
From a statistical point of view women make fewer claims than men. But this is a bit like saying white sheep eat more than black sheep. (There are more white sheep).
Don;t get me wrong, I do think that women on the whole are safer drivers, but I don;t believe this is why the premiums are lower. the premiums are lower because of the lower claims and a marketing strategy to attract women.
In the uk/us/canada far more women do less driving than men.
So if you look at what mileage drivers do in a year it will tend to be men that are at the higher end. This means they spend more time on the raod and are more likely to be invloved in an accident.
(This is not saying anything about their driving skills just about their chances of being in an accident) Youy can also look at the statistics for the most likely times of the day for accidents to happen and the proportion of men/women on the road.
I think men are more risk taking than women and also tend to have better spacial awareness for a number of reasons. This may help them perform better when driving under pressure. Or it may help them take unecessary risks.
In order to see if women are better drivers than men you would need to decide what "better" is first and then construct some kind of blind test with impartial judging.
Good luck with this...

Like le_coupe says women have less expensive accidents than men, but statistically in the UK at least they have more accidents than men, make more claims as determined by the ratio / mileage per year. But when men crash, especially young men, it's likely cars are written off and big money is paid out.
Taken as an average Men have better spatial awareness and women verbal reasoning, so men logically should be better drivers again taken as an average, that's not to say its true in all cases, some women have had success in motor sport so they must be far better drivers than all those men, me included, who have answered this question. I saw a survey where 85% of men rated themselves as excellent drivers, where that was the top rate, now if good is given as better than average, 85% can't be better than good

There was a time that women drivers where considered safer drivers in our society by the insurance cos. That is not the case anymore.Women's rates are no cheaper than a man. I learned this fact several years ago when my daughter started driving as I thought the same thing and checked into it. It is a fact that the ratio for accidents involving women is about the same. Some contributing factors to this I was informed was that women have a tendency to take their attention from the road while trying to apply make-up or messing with their hair. Also cell phone use while driving is more abusive by women. This is not to say men don't abuse cell phone use while driving. Statistics show more accidents with women involved with cell phone use than men. The only way for anyone to save money on their insurance rates is to maintain a clean(no violations) driving record. So this is just one area that women and men share equally in our society.

There are men who I would NOT ride with. They are horrible drivers.
There are women who are as bad as the men.
I don't see at as a gender issue. It is the person.
Men are taught from childhood to be out there, mixing it up. They are guided to do things that build coordination and the ability to judge distance so they do have that advantage over women. But men are more likely to take risks.
Lately I have noticed a large percentage of the drivers who pass me are women, they are speeding in greater numbers than ever. They coast through stop signs and fly up to the stop sign too fast, then slam on the brakes at the last second. With all that going on it is only a short while before their accident rate equals or exceeds that of the men.
You've come a long way baby......................

No women probably have more accidents than men but they are usally far less costly. That was according to my driving instructor. His thoughts on the matter were that men will more often make an error on their own or someone elses part worse by trying to accelerate out of danger.A higher percentage of women will use the brakes and pray so if its a collision especially two men or a man and a woman damage stands a chance of being much higher.

I agree, women, on the whole, are much more courteous than men. Too many male drivers have a macho thing going when they get behind the wheel. If some women drivers have a fault it is that they appear not to think as far ahead, but I guess pleanty of men dont either, (just a particular grumble of mine).
Given the choice of a male or female chauffeur, go for the women everytime

What is Better, faster, smoother? Jenson Button is a man, see the beard, and Michael Schumacher may also be male.
Men usually like cars and enjoy operating them, driving, tinkering etc and men usualy enjoy the feeling of being "In Control" powersliding, twitering tyres on bends etc and develop their car control to a high degree. Through this their car control is usually better than women and this is the criteria on which men judge good driving hence they are better drivers.
Women and Insurance companies put accidents per Calendar year as the criteria, and as Women almost invariably have less accidents per Calendar year than men because they do not usually drive simply for pleasure and thus do less miles so they appear to be a safer insurance risk hence better drvers.
Whether this means Women have less accidents per mile is debatable, then again how many women make their man drive when it is snowing, foggy, the 3 a.m. slot overnight on the Motorway ? and those other times where accidents are much more likely to occour per vehicle mile?.
It may be that womens accident rates are climbing to match mens, even on a per calendar month basis due to mobile phone abuse, especially composing a text or dialling when driving, leading to loss of concentration and a crash, but my Insurance still went down £10 when I added my wife to the premium, and I have 7 years accident free, and she is 10 years younger than me.
Its a funny old world.

Statistically men have more accidents than women per year. Statistically men drive many more miles per year per women.
Statistically men have fewer accidents per mile than women.
Statistically men are better drivers but because of the higher mileage are more of a RISK for insurers hence have higher premiums. Additionally men are far more likely to have an accident caused by them avoiding other bad drivers as opposed to being involved in an accident that was not your fault but you did not have a clue it was about to happen because you were not aware of your surroundings.
My girlfriend is a better driver than me, but then I am completely crap and she used to race cars.

No, women think they're better drivers than men. That's why their insurance is cheaper than ours. Men don't think "we are better". We know "we are" so the price of insurance for women is far lower to make them think "they are better". I'm a man, last time I looked, and I've only got 9 points on my licence, had 5 accidents in the last year and written off 3 cars since 2002.
