Umm... Four!
I think three is probably too many exclamation marks, as one will usually do.

Seriously though, I know what you're talking about, and the answer I can only come to is that the question is something only you can answer yourself.
As it is you that would "feel" how many is too many. If not then maybe you will just have to "observe" more and learn from experiences of having too many.
I completley get this saying though, cause too much of ANYTHING can be bad.
There should always be a balance, and if you say what about Love, or joy, or good things; how can too much of that be bad?
My answer is that if it was good, then there wouldn't be the classification of too much on it!
Which I think is the point to your question.
At what stage do you classify something as too much? Well I guess when it is unnecessary or harmful to take more.
If there is no need to take more, or other options to need no more, then it would become unnecessary.
I think this can only really be known by your instincts, your instincts are usually never wrong. It is just your emotions, justifications, and confusion that cause you to misinterpret your instincts.
I think you just need to listen to your instincts, and become more independent to listen to yourself.
If you don't feel confident in that, then educate yourself to give yourself the confidence, and freedom that knowledge brings; to make the choices like How many!!!! are too much! Ha Ha. Good luck, hope this helped you. :]

Usually one is too many. It didn't used to be considered proper to use them at all. Unless it is just for fun.
