Sony brands.

Consumer Reports did a special issue on notebooks awhile ago. One of the categoris they look at was how often the notebooks needed to be repaired. Sony laptops performed the best; sony had best chance of not having any mechanical issues

If best is durability and quality, then the answer is surely Sony.

Mine is HP and I love it. I've only been using it for a few months but so far so good. My sister has been using it for over 2 years now and has never encountered any problems with it. I think it's a great notebook with a reasonable price compared to the other brands.
Toshiba is equal to HP quality-wise and price-wise but I've heard of stories about malfunctions even on new ones, so be careful.
Dell is quite famous these days, but I've personally never tried it or know much about it. The PCs at my work are DELL and they're good but don't know much else.
Sony and IBM are of course THE top brands but more expensive than the rest.
So if you can afford Sony or IBM, get that, if not I'd advise you to get HP.

Toshibas has the overheating problemss in all models...
HP/Compaq ... what a peice of junk ...
Sony ... very good but expensive
IBM ... more geared towards the business user ..
Dell ... no comment but remember that they are the largest selling laptop company...

I guess I wanted to say that any of the last three would do...

Toshiba is what I found very good. Sony is ok but way too costly.

Rest just falls on the same line.
