Boracay in the Philippines is one of the most beautiful beaches in Asia. The sand is pristine-white and powdery and the water is a clear blue-green. It is a very popular place for diving, windsurfing and kiteboarding. If you get tired of hanging out at the beach (which is very much doubtful) you can always go to the butterfly garden and watch the butterflies, or go fishing at the Kingfisher farm.

I hope this helps.

Patong Beach in Phuket, Thailand was great. I was there in '91 when I was in the Navy but I don't know how it has recovered since the Tsunami. As a high tourist area I am sure they have got it rebuilt by now.

Many of the Videos you saw on the US News that were taken from the upper story of a hotel showing the wave come in were taken in Phuket.

Langkawi Island, my fav place to go. I like staying in Holiday Villa langkawi, the beach fronting the hotel is private, quiet and it is so peaceful there. I remember just lying down on the beach under a tree and no one bothered me at all. When you walk in the beach during early morning, you'll see crabs of all sizes running around. Isn't it devine? I better plan for another holiday.

i've been to bali in indonesia and phukett and krabi in thailand. but nothing beats boracay and palawan in the philippines. the sand is powder soft and the water, pristine turquoise. the resorts are not 5 star so it's a downside. but the beaches are excellent. for a 5 star resort i would recommend pangkor laut in malaysia. if i can combine the beach of boracay with the amenities of pangkor laut then it would truly be bliss.
