I really need help! I have a Dauchie/Terrier mix (Maggie) That i have to leave outside when i go to work! She drives me and all my neighbors nuts! I can't leave her in the house durring the day! I've tried shock collars (which i had to take off her cause it hurt her too bad) ive tried different training methods and now were trying the citronella collar! Which works OK but when it goes empty and i dont refill it in time she goes insane! I am looking for a premanant resolution to her barking besides (debarking) her! I cant afford the surgery! Any suggestions would be appreciated!

a dog has no sense of time. when you are gone for just an hour to her it seems like for ever and that you are never coming back. She needs company during the day, can you find a dog-sitter, perhaps an older person who lives alone?

You have to teach her how to speak on command - Once she understands how to speak on command, then you can teach her how to shush on command - once you teach her the shush command now you can start to teach her when she can bark and for how long -

Example - a car turns around in your driveway - she barks once twice and then you say Ok Shush now - by repeating this sequence every time someone or something enters the driveway you are telling the dog Thank you for telling me about the stranger - I see it and now you have to be quiet -

Next have someone knock on the door and you will teach her to bark twice and then sit down and stay until the door has been opended and the guest has entered and the dog must stay seated until the guest says hello to the dog and then offers the dog a treat - now the dog will get accustomed to this routine - two barks a sit and stay and then I get a treat - I suggest that you keep some treats by the door and have your family members practice these scenarios several times per day -

If the dog is not crate trained - crate train the dog and once she is crate trained - when you leave to go to work - the dog will be in her crate being quiet because you are going to #1 crate train her and # 2 provide her with an interactive treat releasing toy and or a stuffed Kong so she has something to nibble on and occupy her time while she is in her crate - once she finishes her treats she should be tired enough for a nice nap and when she wakes up you will be home.

This plan also calls for a brisk 30 to 45 minute walk prior to her being crated in the morning and another 30 to 45 minute walk/run after being released from her crate but before she eats her dinner and drinks some water (to prevent bloat).

Try giving the dog a little playtime everyday. It only takes a little to make the pet happy & to feel secure.Try giving the dog toys & a rawhide bone should do the trick.Dogs bark for a reason. It needs food,,water,,or is bored.Maybe someone is walking by & it is their nature to protect you & your property.Cant you give the little dog a nice bed indoors at night?
