local farmers, or schools, hospitals etc with large car parks or parking space for cars, vans etc, charge sellers to set up stalls. Most people wanting to get rid of unwanted items, clothes, chiana etc take all this stuff in their "car boots" to one of these venues and sell their goods. Some people now make a living out of it, they are popular with buyers, because programs like the antiques road show, often have people who have brought an item for 50p or £1 and it turns out to be worth hundreds! BEWARE of imitation china, so called antique toys etc, a lot of fakes are now to be found at car boot sales. In amercia they tend to hold more garage sales than we do in this country.

Car boot translates in to Amercian as the trunk!

In the U. K. a "car boot sale" is the same as a "garage sale" or a "yard sale" in the U.S.
They are all sales of stuff people want to get rid off.
