My husband and I want to move to Portland, even though we've never been there. Can you tell me what is great about it?

I've lived all over the U.S., as well as abroad. I've now lived in Portland for about 15 years, and I can't imagine moving anywhere else.

What's great about Portland?
- I love the weather. It doesn't get too hot in the summers or too cold in the winters. We get maybe one week of snow per year (if that), and one week of temperatures at 90 degrees.
- Portland is within two hours of the ocean and the mountains.
- The people are easygoing, tolerant and open-minded.
- The natural scenery is gorgeous - lots of trees, the Columbia gorge, and a great view of Mount Hood.
- It has all the cultural stuff that you would expect from a big city.
- It's a growing city, and it's forecasted to keep growing for the foreseeable future. Growing cities are much nicer than shrinking ones, for a variety of reasons.

Oh yeah, and Oregon has no sales tax. That's always a plus :-)

Don't be scared off by the stories of "it rains all the time" - that's just a tale we spread in order to keep the Californians out. There's really only rain in the winter. Come to think of it, we've had some pretty dry winters lately too.

C'mon over, you'll love it.

Portland is the largest city in the U.S. state of Oregon, and county seat of Multnomah County. It straddles the Willamette River south of its confluence with the Columbia River. Portland is the second largest city in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Only Seattle, Washington is larger.

The population of Portland is estimated to be 556,370 as of July 1, 2005[1], and that of the surrounding metropolitan area (MSA) is approximately 2 million (the 24th largest in the United States).

Portland is known as "The City of Roses" or "Rose City", nicknames that originated during the 1905 Lewis and Clark centennial exposition[citation needed]. Its climate is ideal for growing roses, and the city has many rose gardens, including the International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park. Other nicknames for the city of Portland include "Stumptown", "Bridgetown" (due to its numerous bridges), "Puddletown" (due to the weather), and "River City" (due to its proximity to the Willamette and Columbia Rivers). Modern colloquialisms for the city include "PDX" (after the city's airport code), "P-town", and "Rip City" (from an exclamation by Portland Trail Blazers radio announcer Bill Schonely when the team scored an exceptionally good play).

Why Portland? It's one of the most crowded cities in Oregon. Do some research before you move there. Visit too.

It is close to the airport, so I can get out of it fast.
For me the only thing to love about Portland is leaving.

I would recommend maybe you move to a subarea of Portland, but stay away form Portland. If it is bad or negative you can find it in Portland.
