The "click-click" sound of the shotgun is enough to cause any burglar to leave a piss trail as he runs away... a short barrel revolver has a tendency to be very inaccurate... a shot gun, depending on the shot used, can scatter and leave a wide spread of pellets on the s.o.b., er... I mean "target," while the short-barrel revolver will miss and runs a risk of going through plaster walls and endangering others in the house... but, it's easier to point a gun... I'll take the shotgun over the short barrel revolver for the home but the short barrel for use on my person (it's stupid for a woman to have it in her purse; by the time she pulls it out... well, forget it). The convenience of an automatic weapon is often a disadvantage in the hands of an inexperienced person. I recommend classes from an experienced and licensed instructor regardless of the preference or choice you make.

Different uses both have advantages.
Both are advantageous in home personal defense scenarios. Personally I prefer a handgun. I do own revolvers but I would much rather use an auto. My caliber of choice is .45 but that is a variant of the individual. My wife enjoys the security of a 9MM.
Excluding a shotgun from a home arsenal wouldnt be prudent. Most defensive shootings occur at a range of 8 meters or less. Its hard to miss with a nice 20" 20GA pump at that range. Sure, a pistol grip is useful but again, hard to beat the stopping power of a .45.
For concealment, (if thats legal in your state)
I prefer a H&K .40 sub compact. Its a stagerd clip, relatively good stopping power and very balanced. H&K makes a fine weapon all around in any caliber.
Anyway, happy hunting & good luck.

Home protection purposes only=shotgun.
All you have to do with a shotgun is point in the general vicinity of your target and chances are it is either going down or going to be hurting real damn bad. Also, if you have a wife (or kids) that is unfamiliar with guns like mine is, then it is easier for her to be able to defend our family if I am work with a shotgun.
For on your persons protection=revolver
More concealable than a shotgun. Little better in my opinion in a close quarter situation. I don't really like revolvers much but my choices were shotgun or revolver so I would have to choose revolver in this general setting.

shotgun hands down ... it takes alot of discipline and practice to be effective with a pistol much more with a snub nose .... and a short barrel pistol will render you deaf if fired indoors as well as blind you in a low-light situation from the muzzle flash ... not very safe in a combat situation where fractions of a second of reaction time can mean life or death ... (semi-auto)shotgun + 3" magnum #1 buck ... keep a small pistol for backup

Depends on the use. For strictly home defense the shotgun. Easier to hit your target with minimal practice. The deadliest close range weapon in the world frankly.
If I want something to carry with me then the pistol. Simply due to ease of carry. They require alot more practice to be proficient with though

If I wanted want to protect my house I would get a shotgun because of the wide spread (easy to aim) and enormous takedown power (at close range).
If I wanted something for protection while walking or out on the streets (with a concealed weapon permit, of course) I would prefer a pistol (duhh), but they are much harder to aim with.

shot gun hands down point a shoot wont miss much don't have to be a great shot when fired the shot will spread out , on the other hand if you are a good shot a handgun is lighter concealable and you probably get more shots from it but for home security id defiantly go with the shotgun

Home protection definently a shotgun, it is more intimidating, and for carrying around town obviously the revolver. easier to conceal obviously. But if you come here to alaska you can carry both around concealed our out in the open if you like. armed society is a polite society

Neither sweetness. A Ruger mini 30 and a Walther p99 in S/W .40. You can't reload revolvers quick enough. shotguns are all over the place, too much recoil. I like a more precision approach.
