There is nothing magical about it bulls..Although American pit bull terriers are indisputably powerful dogs, there is no scientific evidence showing them to have a stronger bite than other large dog breed. In fact, when Dr. Brady Barr of National Geographic (Dangerous Encounters: Bite Force, 8/18/2005) measured the bite forces of three dog breeds using a computerized bite sleeve, the American Pit Bull Terrier generated the least amount of pressure out of the 3 dogs tested, (the other two dogs were a German Shepherd Dog and a Rottweiler).<< http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pit_bull

Is it true that Pit Bulls can lock their jaw?
The infamous locking jaw is a myth. The American Pit Bull Terrier and related breeds are physiologically no different from any other breed of dog. All dogs are from the same species and none have locking jaws. Dr. I Lehr Brisbin of the University of Georgia states, "To the best of our knowledge, there are no published scientific studies that would allow any meaningful comparison to be made of the biting power of various breeds of dogs. There are, moreover, compelling technical reasons why such data describing biting power in terms of 'pounds per square inch' can never be collected in a meaningful way. All figures describing biting power in such terms can be traced to either unfounded rumor or, in some cases, to newspaper articles with no foundation in factual data." Furthermore, Dr. Brisbin states, "The few studies which have been conducted of the structure of the skulls, mandibles and teeth of pit bulls show that, in proportion to their size, their jaw structure and thus its inferred functional morphology, is no different than that of any breed of dog. There is absolutely no evidence for the existence of any kind of 'locking mechanism' unique to the structure of the jaw and/or teeth of the American Pit Bull Terrier."<< http://www.austinlostpets.com/kidskorner/2October/pitbull.htm

No such thing as a locking jaw and no such pressure as 1000- 1200 psi in a bite. A game APBT will beat a Shepherd and it would not be a pretty sight. It`s obvious you don`t anything about the breed but there is nothing wrong with that. A schooled out Apbt, proven to be game could give up any weight difference and still win the fight. Can you picture a 50lb dog winning over a 110lb dog? A game dog would die before quitting and this is something the Shepherd does not have. A game dog loves to fight, other breeds fight as a defense or the level of aggession in them. Most people would crap their pants if they could witness what a game dog can and will do. These are`nt your neighbors pets we`re talking about. They are highly conditioned dogs that are very strong ,agile and will take care of business no matter how long it takes. It would`nt be right to put a APBT against a Shepherd as it would be no contest.

I am the proud owner of both breeds and rescue both breeds. This is a question with NO definitive answer. I have gotten german shepherds in with a fierce aggression streak and Pitbulls that wouldn't fight if their life depended on it and vice versa. Pitbulls do NOT have locking jaws NOR more bite pressure per square inch. Someone else said, "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog"> That's basically true. For one, I never allow my dogs to fight; I am the alpha, they know that and without MY Permission, they do NOT fight. Period. Pitbulls are a little more agile and their smaller size allows for more stamina. Pitbulls only advantage is if the come from a line that was bred as a fighter and they have developed the tenacity to just not give up and it is noted that pitbulls seem to feel less pain when engaged in combat that allows them to go on even when injured giving them the tenacity they are notorious for.

Pit bulls have been bred specifically for dog to dog combat for nearly 200 years. Pit bulls also bite with a force of almost 2000 pounds per square inch -- that's twice the force of a German shepherd. The construction of their jaw allows for this. Imagine how ineffective a bear trap would be if it were shaped more like the long snout of a German Shepherd!

Personally,I think that part of it may be due to the wolf cousin.
When a wolf goes after prey it goes for the legs of animals larger than themselves to disable it before it kills so dinner can't get away.
German Shepherds tend to do the same going for the leg to disable which is why they're so often used by the police.grabbing and dragging a person down and holding them there is in their nature.
A pit has more of a tendency to go straight for the throat.

I used to have a German Shepherd that was dominant and agressive. My biggest fear, aside from being hit by a car, was picking a fight with a pitbull. The jaw power would be no match. Luckily, that never happened!

Pits have stronger jaws and have more muscle than a Shepherd. Most pits are massive muscle wise, and I have one who the biggest sweet heart but his head and jaw size are incredibly huge. The Shepherd does not even come close. They were bred and designed for two different purposes. The shepherd was bred for herding.

German shepards are trained to lock on but Pitbull Terriers automatically know. Also Pitbull Terriers have more muscle that German Shepards, than any dog actually.

And are cuter.

From,
A proud Pitbull Terrier owner.

ps. fighting dogs is wrong. why would it matter if a german shepard lost to a pitbull? you shouldn't be fighting your dog anyway.

There is no comparison - Pit bulls were bred to fight - they have stronger jaw pressure then the GSD breed and they were also bred to not let go once they have latched on - they have the ability to lock their jaws closed and they will actually allow their jaws to go into a muscle spasm of a sort - GSD's cannot match this behavior although they are good attack dogs - they were not bred for dog fighting and pit bulls were and it does not matter who likes what breed of dog - pits were bred as dog fighting machines hence they will always win when measured against any dog breed that was not bred for fighting.

the chest of a pitbull is unbelievably strong and outweigh the german shepherds, usually used to knock their opponent to the groung and prepare for the jugular. with 1,200 lbs of locking pressure in their jaws and a dislocatable jaw, this makes for a sure kill. Although the German Shepherd is a great dog in both attack and agility, the natural killer instinct when provoked of a pit is unmatched.
