The only thing that I have found to work is if the onions have been in the fridge first they don't seem to make your eyes water. Other than that once they are watering you need to watch a fast running tap to stop them from watering.

The best way to cut the onions is to cut while wearing swim goggles. As ridiculous as you might look while cutting, you will be immune to the noxious gasses emitted from the onion as you cut it.

Soaking them in water does dampen the affect, but does not completely stop it.

Wear glasses or sunglasses, if it's bright enough. I read somewhere that lighting a candle by your work area also helps. If nothing else works, buy an onion chopper with an enclosed place for the onion.

Sometimes I chop the onion outside. If I can't go outside to do, standing near an open window helps. I guess it keeps the air fresh. I also have a mini chopper. It works until you take the lid off. But at least it's over quicker.

Ive heard that once the onion is peeled and ready to be cut just wash it.

I dont know if it works but it worth a try.
