I came down with a disease in February that garbeled my speech so bad only my wife could understand - sometimes.
I learned that alternative communication is slower and requires more patience. It tends to be not as precise.
I thought for a moment about not needing ears...but then I remember how we use them to triangulate our positions and watch out for rabid ebay users.
The worst part though would be not being able to say "I love you" to people you care about.

We'd start using sign language and try to make machines that could probably speak for us.It would be more difficult for us to make ends meet or start some relationship.

for one thing, none of what you see around you and it's man made would exist as you know it.. speech is a direct manifestation of the mind's ability to conceive, process and evaluate.. no speech would mean a very different human brain..
