Dye it. I think it may have partially to do with stress, but more so to do with genetics. Talk to your doctor to get a physical done to make sure you're doing okay and take vitamins!

Graying occurs as specialized cells in hair follicles called melanocytes lose their ability to produce pigment (melanin) over time. It's not that hair actually turns gray, but that new hair with less melanin grows in. White hair has virtually no melanin.

Genes play a large role in graying, and there's wide variation among ethnic groups. Men tend to turn gray earlier than women. Smoking is linked to premature graying. In rare cases, gray hair may be a sign of illness.

Unfortunately, there are no proven remedies for gray or white hair other than coloring it, despite the claims made for some dietary supplements. Melancor-NH, for example, allegedly boosts melanin (and stops male pattern baldness to boot) with its blend of bromelain, collagen, biotin, inositol, and other ingredients. Its maker says the supplement is "clinically proven," but cites no evidence aside from testimonials and did not provide us with any data despite repeated requests. There's no reason to think any of these substances would affect hair color. What's more, Melancor is supposed to take 6 to 12 months to work, by which time you've spent hundreds of dollars for extremely unlikely results.

Graying usually starts in 30s and gradually increases over the next several years. When our bodies are functioning well, cells in our hair follicles called Melanocytes generate pigments -- the chief one being Melanin. When the Melanocytes stop producing these pigments, we sprout a transparent hair, which appears as an unsightly gray due to the color of the dead cells that comprise the strand.

Why does this happen? The most common reason is heredity; premature gray hair is yet another thing we can blame on our parents. But there are also several medical conditions characterized by graying of the hair. A B-12 deficiency, a thyroid imbalance, and anemia can all cause premature gray hair. And if you needed yet another reason to quit smoking, there is new evidence that smokers are four times more likely to go gray at a young age.

The common belief that psychological shock or trauma can turn hair gray overnight is cause for a fair amount of controversy. While some people claim such an occurrence, our scientists question the actual time frame involved.

Hair typically turns gray as a result of the natural aging process. The pigment in the hair shaft comes from cells at the base (root) of the hair. These cells are genetically programmed to make a certain amount of pigment (Melanin) starting at a specific age. At some point in the aging process, these cells start to make less pigment until the hair has little pigment at all. A white hair has no pigment, and a gray hair has some pigment but not as much as red or brown hair. Melancor works to revitalize these dead cells that compromise hair strands.

Melanin is a natural substance in the body. When due to known or unknown reasons there is a decay in it, the hair roots and cells do not get enough of it or if the root cells become weak, there is a premature graying of the hair. The following reasons are considered to be the causes of premature graying:

Decay of melanin,
Anxiety, sorrow etc.,
Keeping late nights,
Excessive, untimely sex or sex in a standing position,
Hereditary factors,
Chronic cold,
Use of very hot or immature spices,
Frustration or dejection in love,
Use of inedible oils,
Faulty circulation of blood in the head,
Secretion of oil or sweat from the scalp,
The damage caused by syphilis,
Excessive exposure to the Sun,
To remain hungry for long periods or excessive fasting,
Excessive secretions from thyroid gland in tall persons,
Too much eating of foods cooked in mixed oils,
Appearance of white spots on the scalp,
Burns,
Frequent use of hydrogen peroxide in the hair,
Mental shock,
Eating hot food, excessive physical labor, anger, fear, jealousy and failure,
Lack of Vitamin B, iron, zinc and iodine in the food,
Washing the hair with hot water and the use of a dryer for drying it,
Constipation,
Heavily scented hair oils,
Refined sugar and sugary products such as tea, coffee, soft drinks, pastries, jam and jelly.
