Just to throw in another thought, could it be that individuals are more tolerant than organizations? That when we can think for ourselves, we tend to see and respect other beliefs, but when we become part of a collective mind such as an organized religion we lose that part of ourselves?

TOLERANCE!

But people don't want to accept other people's beliefs. Many think everyone needs to believe what they do or it's wrong for society. Until everyone can grasp the concept of "tolerance" and "mind your own damn business," then there will always be fanaticism and nonacceptance.

I hate to be the one guy in the room that's a buzzkill, but you guys are wrong. Teaching tolerance is great, I think it's what we should strive for, but let's all sit back and look at all the great minds who have promoted tolerance, the Christ, Ghandi, etc....and look where we are at right now. I would say we're running as fast as we can into another Crusade/World War. Some have already said we are in the new WW, it just all depends on how you like to label stuff. The only real way to enforce the status quo is to gain a consensus of the moderate, establish laws/norms, or whatever pretty name you have on it, and punish the crap out of those who break them. When I say punish, I don't mean a "stiff rebuke" from the u.n., and as I don't or won't capitalize those letters I mean that as an insult to such a truely worthless whore of an organization.....I mean really getting togeather and decimating those who don't want to play ball. It sounds harsh, but when you force people to smile at each other from the end of a gun, I'd bet you be suprised at how many Jews, Christians, and Islamists will sit and have coffee. Or we could just ask real nice....who knows.

Ignorant people gather together, they become a fanatic group.
Knowledgeable people gather together, they become a tolerant group.
So the source of fanaticism is not because of organization, it is because of ignorance.
People can promote understanding between people of different faiths, and prevent fanaticism by enhancing knowledge, by encouraging each other to directly read and apply the verses of the Holy Scriptures, to deepen in the teachings of the Messengers of the One True God.
Conclusion: The source of all evil is ignorance, is lack of the knowledge of the One True God.

The best way to promote understanding and tolerance of different faiths is knowledge. The reason people don't like other faiths so much and talk so badly about them is because it scares them. When a person knows nothing about a faith, it scares them and they run the other way. The more you learn about people and their faiths, the better equipped you are to sit down and have an intelligent conversation with them.

In my country, I was a founder member, later the President of an InterReligious Dialogue Association. There we met followers of all major religions and became wellwishers and cordial. When any speaker presented his/her views, the etiquette was to ask a question for seeking a clarification, but never to contradict him through the sayings of the other religion. We spoke the sacred elders' names in other religions with respect. We treated the volumes containing their holy words with respect. In 12 years (now I have retired) there was no conversion. The friendships then made continued later.

Stop bowing down to a corpse hanging on a pair of sticks, stop kneeling down to a chunk of rock in the middle of the friggin desert, stop worshiping some carved figure with an elephant head and get a life for starters. The sooner people realize that the world is better off without religion, the better for all of us.

If more people would educate their children about different cultures, beliefs, and lifestyles and teach them to accept others for who they are then life would be much more peaceful. Instead they are afraid if they teach them about different beliefs then they will turn away from what they want them to believe, so they shy away from teaching them to understand and accept that everyone has different beliefs. Instead they teach them that only their beliefs are right, that if you don't have those same beliefs you are wrong or even a bad person. They don't even bother to explain what other beliefs are. So in turn you end up with people who are intolerant and just plain ignorant towards others.

Tolerance and information between distinct faiths is a dream that borders on the nightmarish because of the fact it is going to likely be institutionalised hypocrisy. faith in the experience this is faith isn't purely any form of regulation yet relies upon on Revelation from the single God and this in turn relies upon on submission, which isn't purely a making a song and clapping remember. Obedience to Revelation demands sacrifice and this might separate the boys from the boys. Honesty and reason ought to replace tolerance and information and then there will be a fact.

They could simply stop wearing their beliefs like badges on their chests. I am sick to death of people saying I am atheist, Catholic, Jew, Mormon etc etc....who really cares and more important why should they care? Religion and beliefs should be held personal. What do churches and the congregations do...have a membership drive???? People choose beliefs because the ideas are acceptable to them, not the dogma. I am not a Christian but it would be rather insulting to flaunt my beliefs to you...it embarasses you to reject me and my belief or provokes you...Let's just shut-up and not deride others.
