well, I would have absolutely no problem paying for anything for my Yorkie Charlie because I have pet insurance for him. It's called VPI pet insurance and trust me, I have so much peace of mind. he's had a couple of skin conditions that the insurance payd for all his treatments and i get free spay/neuter and teeth cleaning and free shots. i only pay $30 a month!!! I even have him on the cancer rider plan, just in case (God forbid), cause cancer treatment can be very expensive.
btw, i love your questions, i think i might just add u to my watch list. i love animals.

Whatever is appropriate and not just greedy from the vet giver. I feel the same way when it comes to my kids. I will pay their bills but expect fairness as after the crisis people do have a life which needs money. Vet's or any other shouldn't take advantage of family crisis. When a family's pet is in need, they are viewed by that family as a member with four legs and the same last name.

As much as I can. Since I have many dogs, I also have to consider their welfare and the fact that I need to keep a roof over their heads and feed and care for them all, but whatever I can afford within those parameters I will spend if necessary. If I don't have the money I will try to borrow it.

The most I've spent so far on one vet bill is $2000.

I've been fortunate (?) that mostly when my dogs were extremely ill no amount of money could have saved them, so I haven't had to make the decision based on money.

Goliath cost me around 600 one week. Then we had to start him on heart medicine. When we first started it was around 100 a month. Now we've got it regulated at 42 a month. He was on another medicine for his arthritis, but it affects the liver and he already has slightly elevated liver enzymes. It also gave him the runs so I took him off that and now he just gets an aspirin in the morning with his other meds. I'd spend whatever I had to as long as he could have quality of life.

Assuming you don't have insurance. How much would you spend on your child? Answer=what ever it takes! I took out a second mortgage to cover expenses for my rescued pit bull mix when he developed cancer. Brought both of us another 2 years.Well worth it and would do it again. Wish I had insurance then, but you learn. If you love your pet, get insurance. Very reasonable considering the cost of treatment!

I spent a total of about $3100 on a broken leg in an Italian Greyhound ;-) The amputation would have been significantly cheaper... (he needed a bone graft...) I'd cap my limit at $10,000 for one event, I could only actually afford about $5k (on credit...) but it would be almost impossible for me to say 'euthanize' if I KNEW one of my babies could survive... the only reason I say $10k is because that is what I could come up with between loans and current lines of credit. If I had more money availible, there wouldn't be a limit (as long as survival/quality of life was assured)

There is no limit. There is no replacement for the love of your pet. If I knew the problem could be solved by the vet I would pay whatever they charged. Some people may say "You can always get another one", but no two pets are the same, and nobunny could replace my bunny =)

Thats the same as asking how much would you be willing to spend on your own childs medical bills. You would spend what was needed, its a life, and a loved one at that, there shouldn't be a price on it. i know I would spend any amount needed on my babies (2 cats) and have even take a hamster to the vet.

I had to deal with this ethical dilemna recently. My 8 week old puppy (black lab) was attacked by two stray dogs that got into my yard. They broke her hind leg and caused several deep lacerations. I was so afraid the vet would have to amputate the leg (he didn't!!!), and thought the costs would be unreasonable. Turns out the entire bill was only $500 (u.s.). I can handle that. But if it had been over $1,000.00, I would have had to give it second thought. My children need to eat!

We've spent $700 on a necessary surgery and I'd spend more if needed, not sure where I'd draw the line but probably around $1200.
