There are three different kinds of dashes.

In order, from shortest dash to longest dash:

There's the hyphen (" - ")...that's the key on the keyboard next to the "0" key.

There's the en dash (so named because it's the length of the letter 'n'). You're probably in MSWord, right? Go to the Insert menu. Click on Symbol. Click on the Special Characters tab. Select/highlight "en dash". Click Insert.

There's the em dash (so named because it's the length of the letter 'm') . Again, in MSWord, Go to the Insert menu. Click on Symbol. Click on the Special Characters tab. Select/highlight "em dash". Click Insert.

It's the key next to the zero on the top line. If you use the shift it becomes an underline, ________ but just use it straight and it's a hyphen -. In WORD it will often automatically lengthen the hyphen.

Also, when you are in a WORD document, go to INSERT at the top of the page and then choose SYMBOLS. You will find longer, thicker lines in amongst the symbols that you could use.
