If she is becomming emaciated you need to take her to a vet. The nutrients being drained from her system by nursing can kill her if she it too thin.

Baby formula is bad. There are high calorie food supplements availible like Nutri-stat which will help her put weight back on. Changing her food suddenly, or giving her milk/formula can cause diarrhea and make things worse for her. You can (should) also start giving her puppy food, but if she's eating an adult formula you need to make the switch slowly, start with about 25% of her food as puppy food and the rest whatever she is eating now. Also, leave the food out for her to free feed, don't restrict her diet while she is nursing. You can also help her out by bottle feeding the pups a few times a day. This will help decrease the demand on her system. If she is able, she still needs to nurse because engorged milk sacs can be very painful and she runs the risk of drying up if they don't nurse enough.

Really, if she is badly emaciated take her to the vet, she could be having a bigger problem, something causing her to be like that. Dogs that recently whelped (gave birth) should not look emaciated/very skinny.

I wish I could help more... your vet really needs to make sure there isn't an underlying problem.

She would appreciate some puppy formula. It's better for dogs and cheaper too. Never feed cow's milk, it caused diarrhea.
Get a good quality food. Nothing from Petco, Petsmart, Walmart or the grocery store. It's poison, read "Foods Pets Die For" by Ann N Martin, for all the gruesome details if you don't believe me.
Look up Artemis, Wellness, Innova, California Natural and Canidae. All are really good. They have websites by those names.
Canned food has more protein that she needs. Consider that. She will need more food than she did when she was pregnant. If she seems skinny, let her eat all she wants for a while.

There are several different supplements on the market for lactating bitches, I suggest that you contact your vet for his recommendation based on the health and size of the dog and the number of puppies that she is supporting. You can overdose the dog if you givve it too many supplements, that is why it is best to check with your vet. Many factors come into play to decide, the dogs age, general health, any existing medical factors, size of the puppies and the length of time left before the weaning and the current health of the dog. Some mommy dogs do not require any additional supplements.

Give her dry puppy food of a good brand. It has the nutrients in it that the puppies are taking away from her. It also has a higher fat content.

In addition to her regular food ask your vet to suggest the best vitamin for her - now's the time she needs vitamins daily.

Make her wear headgear and keep the sparring to a minimum. NO prizefights until at least a month after the birth.
