bites their heads off and all that remains is the body of whatever it was? I mean do they actually eat the heads of rats or mice. I know cat's stalk their prey but it is so disgusting to find something without a head. My cat is very well fed. Why do they do it? Thanks for all your answers!

My cat won't touch the squirrels, I guess because he know's we feed the squirrels. I notice that a lot of you said your cats get the squirrels and mine stay's away from them, it's like he know's I'll be so mad if he get's them. I hate it when he get's anything especially if it's still alive because then you don't know how to save it. I've called wildlife rescue so many times!

I've got a super cat, extra large B & W male, he's always bringing something home to us, usually mice, some rats, squirrels and chipmunks, every now and then a bird and then there was that time he brought me a large, live, pissed-off woodpecker who didn't necessarily want to be rescued. What really makes me mad is when he brings something live home and turns it loose in the house. If a couple of days go by and he hasn't caught anything, he gets depressed and roughhouses with our minpin like she was his prey. With cats, its just their nature, there's no way to stop it except to never let them outside.
We feed the birds, have several feeders in the yard but he knows not to mess with them. Our other cat doesn't really hunt, every now and then he'll catch a mole, usually he catches bugs and he brings it back to us and just talks the whole time, but sometimes he catches my fish out of my pond and he will eat them. I'm trying to train him to leave my fish alone.

Our cat would stalk and kill bunnies and small squirrels. Usually she would bring them to the back door. If we didn't notice and stop her, she would almost always eat the head. Sometimes, she would keep eating, leaving only the rear legs. I assume she found the head (maybe the brains) to be the tastiest part. It's disgusting for us but natural for the cat.

She is old now (16 years) and we don't let her go out anymore. Her hunting and dining activities don't seem to have done her any harm.

not only do both of my cats do this, they bring them into the house via the cat door. one was dead for 3 weeks behind the piano before we could figure out where the smell was coming from.

they do it because they're born to be hunters. they love to play with them for awhile, then a quick bite to the neck and the rat is dead. they seem to like eating the rat, although they always leave a little bit, usually only the trunk.

You have a good cat who is very loyal to you. The cat is doing you a favour by getting rid of the vermin. You should praise your cat for getting rid of those rats and mice. I'll take your cat if you don't like that it is doing that! You have a great cat!

You bet. Mine are good little hunters. My gardening neighbors invite my cats to their yards to get rid of chipmunks, etc. It is gross to have to get rid of the smelly body. My mother's cat can no longer go out and hunt. He hates cat food and really liked what he hunted. My mother is so frustrated trying to find food he'll eat, and found herself at a pet store asking why the don't sell what her cat really wants to eat---cat food made with mice!

They are hunters and seek prey. Cats are only domesticated to a point. It is their natural instinct. Try putting a small collar with a small noisy bell on the cat and see if that works. Otherwise, get a kitty litter box and keep the cat indoors.

My cats do it to mice, squirrels, anything they can get their paws on. They are hunting to hunt not because they are hungry. And when they are full they will leave their spoil there for you to find.

my mom had a cat once that was continually bringing her "trophies" of birds, mice, rats, lizards and an occasional snake!! We have no idea how she got the dead bodies upstairs without no one noticing!!

Cats are natural hunters. They will catch/kill no matter what, it is an instinct. Even thoughit it is not pleasant, the exercise and mental work involved with hunting will keep your cat healthy and happy.

cats leave mice and stuff where you can find it because he thinks of you as family and he is leaving food for you . it is a sign of being comfortable in it's home .... don't know about the head thing though .... neck must be a weak point
