I'm just wondering because there are a lot of people that do it, not just teenagers, adults too. I don't think it's a sin, more of a mental illness that God can heal but is there any scripture in the Bible about this topic?

I never said it was a sin and I do believe God can help someone with it because he's helped me.

Zoloft is for depression, not necessarily for cutting. But cutting falls into that category. I believe what I believe you believe what you believe. I believe, because um, it's pretty much happened, that he's gotten me through cutting and I'm a better person.

Technically, going to the bathroom is a sin according to Christians.

Seriously, have you ever read that thing they call the bible? Scary!

The term "sin" literally means "missing the mark". It comes from (Roman) Latin, and was used when Roman soldiers would "miss the mark" in training with the bow.

Cutting yourself is an emotional outlet. It's a sign of a much bigger problem going on in your life. I think that anyone in the habit of dealing with stress and issues of self-worth in their lives probably knows that what they're doing is indicative of something serious that they need to get some help with.

It's a little more serious than you might imagine. It's more than just being moody or snapping at people, isn't it? You're doing yourself harm in order to feel a little pain. You've taken a step in a direction toward some serious self-destructive behavior. In other words, you're not putting a gun to your head, or escaping through drug abuse, but you're starting down that path, right?

To a Christian, they're "missing the mark". They're not living a Godly life, or respecting their own bodies as temples or symbols of God. It's not so much about the cutting, it's about self-respect, and not getting the counseling you truly need.

Talk to someone. Start by putting your head down in your room, shut off the computer, and let the Big Guy Upstairs know how you feel.

Talk to your parents, talk to a teacher, talk to a counselor, talk to someone at church. Don't bottle this up inside. There's nothing seriously wrong with you yet. Talk to someone who's been down the path before.

We are told that our body is the temple of God. When we become a believer in Christ we are given the Holy Spirit to dwell in us and to be our paraclete, that is our helper. So God ask that we treat our bodies with the utmost respect since He, in the form of the Holy Spirit, has come to indwell us.Yes, cutting of our body is a sin as in gluttony, smoking, excessive alcohol, or any other substance or deed that would injure the body or its health. I agree that this sometimes may happen due to mental illness but it still is a sin against God whatever the impetus may be. God, of course looks upon us and sees our motive for the actions we take and is always forgiving when we sometimes are not. Hope this has helped.

Well, if you want my honest opinion, I think it probably is. Now, let me qualify that. I smoke. Like a stack. I'm a Christian. I believe smoking is a sin (you know, the body is a temple, etc...). But so is jealousy, lust, lying, and many other things we do. Just because my body is addicted to cigarettes, doesn't get me out of the sin part. But.....and this is a BIG But.........I know I am forgiven. I keep trying to quit, I know it's not good for me,,, but I know I am God's child, and that He loves me, and that I am forgiven. Same with cutters.

This is an interesting question for me, I'm doing a paper on cutting for a class I'm in...do you mind if I use your question in it? email me and let me know if it's not ok.

God bless you

Whoa,,,just read your additional details...I am so proud that you are finding new ways to cope!!! If this is too personal for me to use, I understand.

Yes it's a sin. It is hurting yourself. I have to be honest, I do not understand why people do this. Are they in such pain that they are injuring themselves to release it, to feel something real? Whatever it is, it is a terrible thing, because it represents true desperation inside that person.

Jesus, being the great Healer and Restorer, can bring peace and order to any broken life. Right offhand, I can't think of any scripture, other than the body being a temple for God's spirit. I pray that anyone reading this who does this to themselves, may the transforming love of Jesus Christ take that blade out of their hand forever, and I ask this in Jesus' name.

Yes, it is sin -- it is demonic and went along with some of the human sacrifices in the Old Testament that made God so angry. People would self-mutilate as the sacrifices took place.

Let me add, that if someone is mentally ill, they are being oppressed by a demon or demons. They DO need help. They also need prayer! The Name of Jesus can work miracles!!!

I'm not sure where it states it in the bible, but anything you do to harm yourself is a sin. Rather it's over eating, drugs or self mutilation. Your body is the Lord's temple.

Whether you do or not is irrelevant. If you know someone doing this get them HELP! They are in severe emotional pain and that is the ONLY way they think they can release it and it is NOT true! I do NOT care whether anyone thinks it is a sin or not, that person is living in HELL and the need help to get out of that state.

This goes beyond religion and sin.........IT IS SOMEONE IN PAIN AND THEY NEED YOUR HELP!
