I burned a teflon pan not to the point of seeing smoke but where it was hot enough to boil the water to nothing and a small amout of residue (white) was left!!!! and a strange smell coming from the pan? Is the 15 dangerous toxic chemicals that are emitted from the pan that I burnt enough to be concerned or did I have to see smoke to suggest the release of chemicals??

The gasses emmitted by the pan are not good, but dissapate.
The white, if you boiled water dry , would be the solids in the water- "kettle deposits" and are relatively inert.

The flouro chloro hydro carbon molecules of the teflon itself are most dangerous if they start to peel off the pan into your food. Then they get into you body directly. If the coating starts to come off in tiny chunks like pepper, heave it !

It is true, the fumes can kill, it's the Teflon coating on pans that can kill, if it is heated to a high temperature then the fumes it emits can kill a bird instantly. Fumes from scented candles and perfume, air freshener, among other things may not always kill immediately but will build up and drastically shorten the birds life. You need to be very careful, a birds respiratory system is only small and is greatly affected by fumes. It's not worth the risk to your birds health. if you use Teflon coated cookware make sure the bird is in another room with the door shut. You need to check out all the health hazards before you get a bird, but it will be worth all the effort.

You should never overheat a Teflon pan. You don't have to see smoke to have a problem. Teflon is safe for cooking eggs and other things like that, but if you want to sear something or need high heat, use another pan.

I read an article where 8 birds died in a house where a teflon pan was burning. They used to use birds in mines to detect odorless poisonous gasses before they killed miners. Makes ya think! Here's a great link to how to season a cast iron pan http://www.whatscookingamerica.net/Information/CastIronPans.htm. Good luck!

PS; In this country they tell you not to worry about products until you see the "White light" at the end of the tunnel.

I would get rid of the pan; it's useless for future use, and teflon isn't something that holds up anyway. It has been known to cause cancer. Which cancer, I don't know, but I would retire the pan and buy a new one without teflon.

Wow! You burned teflon? That's an accomplishment! Anyway, teflon's more dangerous just smothering your food in than turning it into a gas. Still, I wouldn't breathe it. But I don't think there's anything to worry about. I don't think they'd put anything on a stove knowing it could burn that would be toxic.

Teflon is a direct ingrediant with many links to cancer. It is strongly cautioned not to be burned or breathe the fumes of burning teflon.

Teflon is also toxic to animals, extreemly in birds when its being burned.
