If you like MacIntosh, you'll probably like Cortland or Macoun even better.

Red Delicious is sweet, but it was grown for looks and not for taste, and because of that eugenic priority RD lacks taste (and is watery) compared with most other apples.

Fuji is too sweet for my taste, though I can see why some people like it. Likewise Granny Smith is just a bit too sour for me, except as a pie apple. In between, there's Braeburn and Pink Lady. Pink Lady in particular is an excellent apple.

My favorite, though, is Gold Rush. It's (almost) as good as Pink Lady, and it keeps as long as Fuji does - from fall picking almost to the summer of the next year. Gold Rush can be used for pies, sauce, cider, salad, eating... anything.

Cortland, it's like a Mac, but it's juicier, I tend to stick to the juicy sweet end of the spectrum as opposed to the more sour and dry like granny smiths and banana apples.... I think they're called banana apples anyway....

It used to be Washington Delicious, and sometimes Pippin when I wanted a little tartness.

However, lately I've gone nuts for Fuji.
