It depends entirely on what you want to do.

Here is a general idea of the difference.

Mechanical engineers work on small parts. Parts to an engine, or any part on a car.

Civil Engineers work on big things: roads, buildings, dams.

You will also notice that Mechanical Engineers often work on moving parts, while Civil do not.

The pay is slightly better for Mechanical and the field is more general (they have a broader knowledge of many areas verses the more specialized Civil.)

Civil Engineers can work in nearly any sized city; whereas, MEs are slightly more limited.

The best thing to do is probably choose whichever sounds the best at the moment, and since the first few classes of both are the same, decide then. After dynamics you should have a better idea.

My husband is a mechanical engineer. It is the most multi-disciplined engineering career.

He works in the defense industry...as a GNC engineer...guidance/navigation/ and controls. He spends most of his days working on simulation.

However, when he first graduated, he was offered a job with Bethlehem Steel...

Pretty much, with a mechanical engineering degree there are many choices when you graduate.

I hope this helps!

Thats a personal preference. Civil engineering might let you get outdoors more, which is always nice. Mechanical would be my choice though, but thats just because I find it interesting.

Personal choice and your attitude means a lot. I will choose mechanical engineering because it is easier to study. If in practical working, any fails in the machine may only cause a few worker die. Unlike civil engineering... a single mistake can cause the whole structure collapse and kill thousands to million of people.....

Well, of course there is price to human life ration. Civil engineer wages is higher because their responsibility is higher .... :)

But in another way of thinking, normally Mechanical contractor who you always due with if you are mechanical engineer is more gentleman in their work... unlike the other who is more rough :)

mechanical engineers, they work on engines that provides materials for other engineers to use.

the word engineering was obviously derived from the word engine, which they specializes.

imagine life without machines.

depends on whether you're more interested in structures or machines or which industry you would like to work in.

If you have a hard time deciding, you can take one specialty and shift to the other if you don't like it.

CE is more on structures, like buildings and bridges.
ME is more on equipment, like cars and airplanes.
Their common ground is fluid mechanics.
