My niece is autistic. She is 10 and hardly uses any words. Her speech development is on the level of an 18 month old. She understands a lot though - when she is paying attention.

Sounds like the type of autism your brothers have is "Kanner's" autism.

Kanner's Autism makes up 12 - 36 % of all the people "on the autism spectrum"
Aspergers makes up 62 - 86% of all the people "on the autism spectrum"
The rest (Rett's, CDC, PDD-NOS) make up less than 3%.

Kanner's is the only type of autism that was known about in America before 1990. The "Asperger" kids were just labeled "Odd", Geeks", or sometimes Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
And not long before that, most doctors felt that autsim was caused by unloving, neglectful mothers. If a doctor KNEW the mother was very loving & attentive, he would likely rule out a dianosis of autism, therefore keeping the diagnosis rate artificially low (back in the 80's & before).

Email if you'd like to chat. I'm very involved with my niece & I can give you some ideas, if you'd like to get more involved in their development.

I have two twin nephews that are autistic. The latest reports say it is a new epidemic.

Autism has various ratings. Some children with mild autism, can lead a pretty normal life...especially with early therapy and intervention. However, the more severe autistic children often are trapped inside themselves. These children often have limited language, and find new situations particularly scary.

Even mildly autistic children have episodes. They have heightened senses. Loud noises are particularly stressfull. Language is delayed. New people are ignored; and, once the child sees a new person in their environment, they get physically upset.

Twins with autism is particularly curious. Because they were in the womb together, and are raised together...they will interact and play together. In general, autistic children are not social creatures...but in the case of twins...the twin bond supercedes this trait.

I hope this helps,
Stephanie

It is not very well known among the general public, despite some recent publicity regarding the false claim that dental fillings, water flouridation and childhood vaccinations are the cause. I feel for your parents - one autistic child is a handful but two? Egad, what a hard thing that is to cope with! I hope social services in your area is involved - their help would be essential to the wellbeing of the boys, their parents and to you as well - cause, since they're your brothers, you're stuck right in the middle of it, and especally during adolescence, that can be real, real rough! You probably would benefit from having an understanding adult other than your parents to talk to about your feelings and all. NOT your pastor - almost none of those people have the training and experience needed to counsel in so complex a situation. Ask your family doctor for a referral for starters.

My co-worker has a seven year old son who's autistic. He has difficulties with social interactions and he doesn't learn or pick up on things as quick as other children because he lacks social cues. He bangs his head against objects sometimes or just sits and rocks alone..away from everyone else. He does not play well with other children. Research shows males are four times more likely to have autism than females. To help him, he attends sessions on weekends to develop social and language skills. There should be programs in your area to help your twin brothers.
