There is no point, beyond simple addiction, I started when I was 13 because I thought it made me look coo and older, Well, I am now 37 and can hardly breath, feel like heck, and cannot quit even though it is messing up my health very badly, please do not start, it is not worth it.

Well there are lots of reasons but the major one is addiction. U see most people claim they can't get addicted to it and that they just want to "feel among". Along the line they get addicted cos the nicotine causes the brain to release some chemicals which lifts one's mood. they then become dependent on smoking for this uplifting mood. Don't smoke though, a cigarette contains about 400 different poisons and the disease they cause are endless! Be safe from smoking!

There is no point and it is bad for you. I also cannot believe the number of people who think that smoking marijuana is healthier than smoking cigarettes, particularly those who believe you cannot get lung cancer from smoking marijuana.

The people who do smoke do it for a variety of reasons, not all of which they would admit to:

to look cool in front of friends (is how they usually start)

"because all my other friends (or my significant other) smokes"

because it's a habit

because movie stars do it (did it - it's becoming less prevalent now)

to lose weight or to keep weight off (appetite suppression)

I was thinking seriously about asking a question to point all this stuff out, so thank you very much for giving me a forum to voice this and 2 points to boot! :)

Cheers!

Insecurity. They're afraid they won't be accepted for who they are, so they do what others do, hoping to blend in with them and become part of the group.

Stupid, isn't it?

The fact that you're asking this question tells me that you're not one to just "go along with the crowd". Good for you. Do what you know is right, regardless of what others think. It pays off in the end.

By the way...have you ever heard a long-term smoker say, "Gee, I sure am glad I started smoking when I was younger."?

Some people smoke because they think it's still cool. It was back in the 70's but now you look like a smelly breath fool.

Because of peer pressure. Other people pressure them into doing it, then when they take that first puff they are addicted for a long, long time.

By the way, here's a smoking joke.

Two birds are in the rainforest, one smokes, the other doesn't.
One of the birds, the non-smoker, smells cigarette smoke, and says to the smoking bird, "Was that you puffin'?(Bird Species)
The smoker bird says yes.
The non smoker says,"Why do you smoke?",
and the smoker replies, after a heavy cough:
"It's for my health."

for many of the same reasons a lot of people drink alcohol. they want to relax, destress, look cool, they're addicted, etc.

anyone who thinks alcohol is safer than smoke is kidding themselves, but i hear arguments in favour of drinking from many of the same people who argue against smoking. alcohol damages the liver instead of the lungs and can also harm non-drinking people who are around drinkers. not always, obviously, but too often there are bad behaviours, irresponsibility, wasted money and motor vehicle crashes, among other things that can be attributed to alcohol, which do not only affect the drinker. last time i checked, driving while smoking a cigarette was not a crime but driving under the influence of alcohol is.

i'm not suggesting you have an opinion one way or another about alcohol in addition to your opinion about smoking, but i know a lot of the people with strong opinions about smoking think drinking is a non-issue.

only slightly off topic and now off my soapbox too.

Actually, there *is* a point. Most smokers report getting a very mild "high" while smoking. This is the nicotine blocking oxygen to the brain, which kills brain cells and produces that mild euphoric sensation.

Much like most substances that make you feel "high", smoking is very bad for your health in the long (and longer) term. Nicotine is also highly addictive, instilling a craving that many smokers find very difficult to deny.

Don't start, its not worth it.

Once smoking is acted upon and the continual use of tobacco becomes a common occurrence, it becomes addictive.

Tobacco is the second most addictive drug behind heroin

Anyone that answered this question without ever being addicted to anything isn't that bright.
