Normally it's Aug 15, isn't it later this time?

You are correct; it is later. October 17 (since April 17 was the initial filing deadling in 2005).

In the past, the IRS had you file a form for the 4-month automatic extension, and then file another form for an additional 2-month extension. In 2005, the IRS eliminated the second form and made filing the first form give you an automatic 6-month extension.

The normal extended deadline is August 15. However, you can file for an additional extension to October 15. However, that extension must be filed by August 15.

In all cases, however, if you owe taxes, those must be paid by April 15 or you will owe a late payment penalty plus interest.
