The Spirit is the "life force." The account of the creation of man states that God formed man from the dust of the ground and proceeded to "blow [naphahh'] into his nostrils the breath [neshamah'] of life, and the man came to be a living soul [ne'phesh]." (Gen. 2:7) Ne'phesh may be translated literally as a "breather," that is, a "breathing creature," either human or animal. Neshamah' is, in fact, used to mean "breathing thing (or creature)" and as such is used as a virtual synonym of "soul." (Compare Deut. 20:16; Josh. 10:39, 40; 11:11; 1 Kings 15:29) The record at Genesis 2:7 uses neshamah' in describing God's causing Adam's body to have life so that the man became a "living soul." Other texts, however show that more was involved than simple breathing of air, that is, more than the mere introduction of air into the lungs and its expulsion therefrom. Thus, at Genesis 7:22, in describing the destruction of human and animal life outside the ark at the time of the Flood, we read: "Everything in which the breath [neshamah'] of the force [or, "spirit" (ru'ahh)] of life was active in its nostrils, namely, all that were on the dry ground, died." Neshamah', "breath," is thus directly associated or linked with ru'ahh, which here describes the "spirit" or "life force" that is active in all living creatures, human and animal souls.

The "Soul": The Hebrew word here is Newfesh. When the Jewish Publication Society of America issued a new translation of the Torah or the First 5 Books of the Bible, the editor-in-chief, Dr. H.M. Orlinsky of Hebrew Union College, stated (New York Times, Oct. 12, 1962) that the word "soul" had been virtually eliminated from this translation because, "the Hebrew word in question here is 'Newfesh.'" He added that: "Other translators have interpreted it to mean 'soul,' which is completely inaccurate. The Bible does not say we have a soul. 'Newfesh' is the person himself, his need for food, the very blood in his veins, his being."

The Roman Catholic translation, The New American Bible (1970), in its "Glossary of Biblical Theology Terms" (pp. 27, 28), says: "In the New Testament, to 'save one's soul' (Mk 8:35) does not mean to save some 'spiritual' part of man, as opposed to his 'body' (in the Platonic sense) but the whole person with emphasis on the fact that the person is living, desiring, loving and willing, etc., in addition to being concrete and physical."

Well the mythological understanding of the soul was something that connects the physical form to the spirit. The spirit exist on a higher plane of existence. The body and the soul can die, but supposedly the spirit lives forever because it is not constricted by the concept of time. The soul feeds on the body but is not truly physical. The ancient Egyptians believe that sometimes the soul seeks to stay alive after the body dies, and they believed this soul with out a body would become a thing like a vampire, feeding on the souls of the living so that they may stay alive. The people that got fed on would complain of feeling physically weak, because their bodies would have to recharge their soul, so the soul could stay connected to the spirit, but if in life the soul got so weak that it lost connection with the spirit, then in death this person too would become a soul vampire too. Not that I believe in all of this, it is just what I have read in my studies on religion and the occult.

Spirit: The ancient Hebrews noticed that the big difference between a being that was alive and one that was dead was that one breathed and the other didn’t. They came up with the analogy of spirit and respiration (notice that the two words come from the same root). When Godde created the first human being (in Hebrew ha'adam, the person), Godde gave the human life by breathing into its nostrils (Gen. 2:4). Even earlier in the book of Genesis, we hear (in the Hebrew) that the Spirit of Godde breathed over the chaos that existed before humans were created (Gen. 1:2). The spirit, in other words, is that little spark of Godde within us that keeps us alive.

Soul: The ancient Hebrews had no conception of the soul; that is an idea the ancient Greeks came up with. For millennia it was thought that when one died, one’s spirit went to an underground place called Sheol, or in Greek Hades, where it had a sort of shadowy half-existence devoid of thought, sensation, or anything much at all. In a late addition to the Nicene Creed, we are told that Jesus descended not into Hell — an invention of the Middle Ages — but into Hades. When in the myth Orpheus went down to Hades to bring his beloved Eurydice back from death, she didn’t much want to leave the blessed freedom from fear, insecurity, and worry. When Saul had a medium conjure up the spirit of Samuel to get his advice, the spirit of Samuel was irritated as hell (so to speak) at having his rest interrupted (1 Samuel 28:7-20).

The spirit is always referred to as the immaterial part of man. Man is not a spirit, he has a spirit. I believe the soul (psyche) is just what the greek word implies... the makeup of man.

The soul is how you relate to others and how you understand yourself. The spirit is how you relate to God.

When you are reborn, you are born of spirit (John 3:5-6). The spirit is part of the soul, much like the mind is part of the soul. It is the soul, though, that comprises who you are.

The soul is something that is in your body and leaves it when you die. The spirit, however, is the heart of the soul. This is how you would die, the soul and the spirit leave the body and enter a new one. This is the cycle of life.

i believe part is the spark of life, or soul, (which has no consciousness) and the other is your consciousness which is independent of life or death, or spirit. now that consciousness isn't necessarily like what you are experiencing now, but something on a far greater scale.

also sometimes the terms soul or spirit get used interchangeably, so it depends on who you ask.

technically the jewish faith recognizes three levels.

nephesh, neshama and ruach. you can look those up..

I think this is the second time you post it. Isn't it?

soul: the way we think and make our own decision. e.g lust.

spirit: to communticated with God. e.g to pray in spirit

By the way tell you some jokes:

-Doctor! I have a serious problem, I can never remember what i just said.
-When did you first notice this problem?
-What problem?

One more joke:

A guy calls his vet and says "What should I do with my cat?Vet says "What do you mean? Guy says "I had a leak in my lawnmowers gas tank and the cat drank the gas. Then the cat began to run around and around the yard, climbed a tree. then fell out of the tree stiff. Vet says "Is the cat dead? Guy replies "nope he ran out of gas.

Last of all just want to tell you that whatever you do, just don't give up. Also you must love and care for the people around you. In that way they will also show you the love that you show to them. Just be yourself and happy everyday. Wish you all the best and good luck!!

the spirit returns to god but the soul dies
Matthew, chapter 10
28: And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot'> kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
luke 8
50: But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well."
51: And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child.
52: And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping."
53: And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.
54: But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise."
55: And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat.
