The more they begin to look like malls, the more the profit margins expose the true reason behind religion.

Ever since someone realized you could milk the weak-minded to build armies to steal the treasure from the less organized tribe, they understood the potential tool they had to control immense wealth.

Religion has been helping prop up the powerful for the past 10,000 years by enslaving the minds of their people. From the Assyrians to the English, monarchies throughout history have made it important to emphasize a religious belief. When you read your history books it's important to read between the lines.

Now politicians have grasped the idea. The republicans in 2000 perfected the political/religious squeeze play, making modern man ignore facts and choose a candidate based only on his religious beliefs. Ask some Christians why they voted for George W. Bush, they’d proudly proclaim it was because he was a born again Christian. Especially here in Texas and throughout the Bible belt.

They knew they had to protect the true purpose of this tool from the people they controlled. Only the initiated, or powerful were enlightened with the power of control. The masses were left ignorant and poor for a reason.

If you teach the slave to read, he might learn to respect himself, organize an opposition, and seize control for himself. Or, in the least, disrupt current economic input.

I always say to anyone who'll listen, imagine how many physicians, physicists, psychiatrists, engineers, mathematicians, or simply college graduates we would have if, the same amount of energy so many generations have put into the so called holy books was redirected into a science. What kind of world would we live in? Not one where wars are waged based on religious differences.

With the costs of education increasing and our government decreasing it's investment in higher education, power structures and class divisions are reinforced for another generation.

Can the people of the "Information Age", pull the wool from their eyes?

The knowledge is free on the Internet, if you have access to it. Even the homeless have access to the Internet in local libraries.

Why has the media continued to dumb down the airwaves?
You can't control the intelligent as much as you can the ignorant.

Just ask the slave.

OMG I live in San Antonio,. the home of John Hagee and Cornerstone. I personally have never been there but I heard that it is very snobby and the women think that it is a fashion show. John Hagee himself lives in a million dollar mansion. The church is huge, I mean huge. He is on national television,. I think that qualifies as a mega church. This church is the religion of John Hagee. He preaches the same old hate and bigotry via the bible.

I don't know if "secular" is the exact word. I think they are too focused on "marketing" instead of substance. So instead of worship with integrity the service is more like group therapy with entertaining music and spectacle. They tell people what they want to hear. It is very tempting to play into secular ideas of success meaning numbers. Faithfulness has nothing to do with numbers.

I have some mixed feelings. On the negative end, it seems like they are just trying to get more people into their doors using whatever current program or method is popular. There seems to be a neglect of preaching the gospel and instead making their meetings more "seeker friendly".

Intead of obeying Jesus command to "go" they focus on getting people to come into their denomination or "their church". It becomes focused on getting more numbers, rather that having a real heart for the lost. Anyway, I am only speaking from my observations of the great shift that has taken place in the last five years.

On the positive side, I have seen many of our youth with a real passion for God and wanting to make a difference it their community.

Thank goodness they are not following their Bibles. There was a time when churches did follow their Bibles and it was called the dark ages.

The new religion they have based off of parts of the Bible is a huge detriment to society in it's opposition to science. It is retarding our society by giving false answers. And when someone thinks they have the answers they will not search for the truth.

"I am against religion because it teaches us to be satisfied with not understanding the world." [Richard Dawkins].

Many--not all--mega churches cater to the particular lifestyles and preferences of the congregation. One in particular--Osteen's church in Houston, I think it is--will not even use the word "sin" so as not to offend its members.

A number of people at these churches are not getting any spiritual food and seem to be getting validation to live their getting-and-spending lives without having to think about anything that may upset them, like, you know, the potential peril of their eternal soul.

So, while I can't speak about all of these churches, since I haven't researched them, the ones I do know a little bit about treat people with kid gloves and don't adequately minister or spread the word of the Gospel. They seem geared to make people feel all hunky-dory about their lives, and they don't appear to challenge them to strive to grow in faith and work out their salvations with fear and trembling.

Moreover, any individual relationship with a spiritual leader is nearly impossible, given the sheer numbers that the leaders would need to minister to.
