pardon the correction but there is such a thing as intincts... call it a gut feeling if you wish but such a trait exists...

sample: a fire broke out in your neighborhood. you know a certain person in that house is disabled and lying in bed. no fireman is a the scene at the moment. what do you do? instinctively, you ask someone's help to aide you in a rescue attempt, right? or the more accurate one, attempt a rescue by your own... that's instincts.

another sample: you're in a compromise... you haven't prepared for a speech and caught unaware at the moment. what do you do? again, instincts dictate you to speak even just for a few words and a few seconds...

to your question about the difference... instincts are part of one's consciousness. the other is logic. both work hand in hand in helping one to decide. weighing which is best, before going for it, that's consciousness...

BTW, this question should have been posted at the philosophy or psychology category... juz an info...

People are born with instincts. Instinctively you know to cry when you are in need of food or a diaper change.

The response to that behavior teaches you that if you cry you will be helped.

Instinctively spiders know how to spin a web and bees know how to get pollen. Humans have instincts as well. When something "feels" wrong you pull away. If there is something odd about a man alone on an elevator your gut instincts tell you to wait for the next one.

A conscience is something that is learned. You learn what is right and what is wrong. You then decide which path you would like to take. People with a conscience feel badly when they make the wrong choice. If someone murders another and they have a conscience they feel awful about it. If they have not developed a conscience then they do not care.

Often children who are abused do not develop a conscience without counseling or additional assistance. They are simply trying to survive and live by instinct. They learn that by lying they may escape a beating. They have to listen to what they feel will help them at that moment. They do not feel badly about lying because it helps them to survive. If removed from the abusive situation it takes work for them to learn to trust and develop a conscience. All of their instincts are wrong because what they learned about life early on is not the same when they are not fighting to survive.

I think there are instincts. It's the reason why you go left instead of right. Instincts don't always have to be correct.

I'm assuming you meant conscience? Because conscious just means you area alert or aware. Conscience is the little voice in your head that helps you make a decision. Whether or not you will follow your instincts.

Conscious is mental events that we are aware of at the moment.
(ex: reading this answer)

Instincts are unlearned-complex patterns of behavior that occur only in the presence of certain stimuli..(ex of instinct: there is no way to explain why salmon swim upstream to spawn except for instincts).
