My husband asked my today if big cats like tiger, lions, bob cats, and cougar poop like house cats. What I mean is do they dig a hole and fill it back up with dirt (or sand, or something)? I know it's a weird and goofy question, but we really want to know. Thanks so much everyone that takes the time to read and answer my question! Have a great night!

Hi Rene...it depends on the environment. The big cats we train sometimes cover their feces since they won't use a litter box as it is unnatural for them. If they decide to mark the territory, which is very common in addition to the urine spraying then they'll leave their so to speak calling card exposed rather than cover it. Their feces are so strong that other exotic felines can smell this from a great distance. Our bobcats and cougars prefer to leave their feces uncovered whereas the african servals sometimes will bury them.

Here's an excerpt taken from lioncrusher.com:

Cats, though for the most part solitary, have a complex communication system. Cats communicate in a variety of ways, from scent to visual to vocal. Cats will regularly mark off their territory with urine. Small cats bury their feces, large cats do not. Also, some male cats do not bury their feces, and use this as territorial markers. Cats also use a substance secreted from the anal glands to mark. Scent glands are located on the chin and paw pads, and are used to mark. Clawing at a tree has many uses: it sharpens the claws by removing the outer layer, it deposits scent from their paw pads and it leaves a visual signal. Cats detect chemicals in the urine by using a technique called flemen, described above in the Smell section of the Senses. Yes.. IT IS A CAT thing. They, in the jungle, will dig a hole just like your little house kitty does in his/her litter box
