Where is a good place to learn about software available for Ubuntu Linux? It is daunting to think of all the available software and have little to go on but a cryptic name. I have intermediate knowledge of linux but haven't played with it for at least 10 years.
I am really looking for a place that gives a discription, rating, user comments, and/or has them available for download or ship on CD (the free stuff anyway).

Linux hasn't changed that much over the years. The biggest changes are in the window managers - Gnome and KDE are much slicker than in the old days. But the command line and most everything under the hood is pretty much the same.
Your best bet is to check places like freshmeat.net and sourceforge.net, which are open source repositories. For the most part, Linux software is Linux software - the biggest difference is in package managers. But most software can be downloaded as a tarball and manually untarred and unzipped and installed without use of a package manager. you might also check out Linux Magazine (http://www.linux-mag.com/), Linux journal (http://www.linuxjournal.com/) and Tux (http://www.tuxmagazine.com/).

Be careful what you go after because some of that stuff out there that they send you and give you will destroy your system. My dad got me some supposedly Unbuntu and it blew my system and when I finally got it off it had password shadow programs that were a bear to remove because it did this terrible partitoning stuff I had to go down into DOS to remove it and reformat it several times. Go online to Sun and get their Linux not the other stuff unless you want to crash and burn etc.

Linux is much more stable then windows. if you wanna check out other distro, go to http://www.distrowatch.com.
For software, I think there is a repositeries of software you can download in ubuntu. maybe you can find from the repositeries wat software you are interested in and do a search. the ubuntu has a wiki to help i think.
