If you have self ligating braces (I believe Damon is one of the brands that does this) you can hold cold water in your mouth and it should ease the pressure on your teeth from the wires (they are heat activated).
Increased heat inside your mouth such as drinking coffee or eating something hot will make this type of wire tighten.

You can ask your orthodontist for a stronger prescription. The other day my braces were killing me and a friend gave me a powdered oral gel to swish around in my mouth and said go buy ora gel. It worked great.
Yeah eat soft foods. Ice can help but it has always made my teeth hurt in drinks if it gets too cold or in my mouth but you can use compresses on the outside but do not put pressure on them when you do this. Popsicles can help some with reducing swelling and numbing. Try to get fruit without much sugar or sugarless popsicles. Stay hydrated when I get dehydrated they cut into my inside tissue of my mouth. I try to sleep through it often as I am not into medicine. It hurts alot for me because when they adjust my teeth start moving and the older a person is the less that teeth like to move. I waited until I just had to do something because the crowding was giving me three day unbearable headaches.

does it hurt because of the pressure form getting the braces? or does it hurt because the braces rub against you inside lip??? I had braces. I used a wax that I got from the pharmacy and I would soften it and put it on the braces and it kept them from rubbing.

My brother had braces once, what he did was hold down the pain, and you will eventually get so used to the pressure, that you will not even notice it. I'm not sure if this is what he did though.

Advil might be better, or you can just wait a few days. It will go away.

Oh, and if you ever lose your retainer, call the orthodontist right away! Dont just forget about it. Otherwise, you will get to have braces twice... Like I did...

Ice down your jaws
Stay away from tough foods to eat, try puddings, applesauce, etc....
The brace wax can go over the brackets if you cut up the inside of your lips.

You can't really do anything except take medicine, and if that doesn't help, you just have to wait. Avoid hard foods like pizza crust, candies, steak, ect. in the meantime.

just wait about 3 days from when you get them - you'll forget you have them, in the time being, take ibueprofen, not tylenol.
