I've heard that the national average in Canada anyway is approximately $20,000. I am getting married next May 20 and I think we are going to be able to do it for around $5,000.

Why does the AVERAGE matter? There is a HUGE range in the cost of weddings. My first wedding (nearly 15 years ago) was probably about $15,000. My second wedding last year was about $1,000. Both were very nice weddings, just different. Do what you and your partner feel comfortable with.

Weddings do not have to be expensive. My wife and I planned and executed our own wedding, reception and honeymoon for less than $1000 in 1984. Our ordained brothers officiated. A sister made the wedding cake. My wife sewed dresses for her two daughters as bridesmaids and suits for her two sons to be groomsmen. She also made her own wedding dress. Rings were from a previous marriage. Our daughter sang a song and we sang a duet during the worshipful ceremony. Food was served by the members at the church following the wedding ceremony. We even had time to take pictures on family members' cameras and open gifts at our mid-afternoon reception. We paid for no band or booze as we did not have dancing or alcoholic beverages. We didn't rent tux. Dark suits were fine. We asked for practical gifts as we were combining two homes. On our honeymoon we traveled over 1000 mles in Michigan and stayed only 3 nights in motels during our week long trip. Other nights were at vacated family homes. We feel we couldn't have had a better wedding. Everything was accomplished in only 3 hours before we left on our honeymoon.

I just got married in June and consider myself pretty average. Our wedding was budgeted around $7000 for 150 people. The main thing is that you need to choose what the important things are to you, for me I wanted to have decent food, a nice dress, a fantastic photographer and DJ. Think of the things that are going to be lasting memories of your day and make them count!

I am from Canada, my wedding was around 7,500
I bought my wedding dress off of E-bay. It was so cheap 300.00
For the favors I bought everything from the Craft store micheal's I spent 250.00 and I got tonnes of things. candels, holders, pots, streamers, ballons.
You only get married once or so one should so why not splerge!
But you can have an awesome wedding and not spend A pile of money you just have to compare prices and shop wisely!

All told, ours is going to be about $9K. We did a lot of it ourselves, and are having under 100 guests, but it's going to be fun and spent with people we love, so that makes it priceless, IMHO. If we had chosen to have a less expensive, buffet dinner (as opposed to the plated one with really tasty food), it probably would have been less.

We are budgeted to spend $5,000 but are having a small wedding (90 guests) at a park and catering the reception ourselves. We are both in college and paying for it ourselves.

Bridal magazine usually say about $17,000 but I have always wondered if they are using the super expensive weddings and the super cheap weddings. (say you just go to the courthouse and have a restaurant meal)

I don't know whay my wedding cost (Thanks to all our parents!) but probably about $17,000. We had an open bar!

i keep reading its 20,000. that just blows my mind. i had a really nice wedding, for 70 people, with alcohol and catered reception, for about 2,500. that gave us more money to spend on the Hawaiian honeymoon!
