The oldest part of Istanbul is literally in Europe. Across the Bosphorous River is the Asian side of Istanbul. I can sit on my balcony in Sultanahmet -- in Europe -- and look out across the Marmara Sea to Asia. Check it out on a map.

Geographically Istanbul is located half in Europe and half in Asia Minor, the oldest parts of the city resting on the European side. With some historical sites on the Asia Minor side in the region of Kadikoy and Uskudar (two areas of the city) especially. Cultural again it is a mixed city. Its historical sites tend to reflect a more eastern origin while its modern side is very much European. Ask most young Turks and they would proclaim themselves European however the older generations have become some what embittered against the constantly changing rules and regulations imposed on Turkey for EU membership. So unfortunately there is no definitive answer to your question, Istanbul is European and it is not European it is just unique.

Yes, Istanbul is in Europe. That's a small territory in Europe left to Turkey after Ottoman Empire. Because that they have right to join the EU. Question is: Is that going to happen?

I have many Turkish friends. They have said they consider themselves part of Europe before part of the Middle East. They refered to it as a Cosmopolitan Nation. Even though they are a predominantly Muslim country they have done a phenomenal job of maintaining peace among the different religious. They are committed to peace in Turkey. In this aspect we can all model after the Turks.
