In early days English system of measurements were used in most of the countries.But for measurements of shafts accuracy and interchangeability is required.Measurements of shafts in sixteenths give more accuracy and interchangeability in English system of measurements.Metric system gives more accuracy because 1mm is less than1/16 of an inch.

Because that's the old English system of measurement. But you can buy shafting in decimal inch or metric sizes.

Its not...its measured in guage in the US and UK. mm in Euro.
