If they were you will never know. I believe its one of two things- the prossessed food we eat or the chemicals that we drink in our clean water.
I think it has become such an epidemic that something is up.
I know so many people who have this ,I do and its a really nasty debilitating thing to have.

If the medical profession is not unified on what causes fibromyalgia, then the government does not have a clue either, and the medical profession is not unified.

My readings regarding my own condition - formerly hypoglycemic, now diabetic, seem to indicate that fibromyalgia may happen in tandem with high insulin (hyperinsulinemia) - the precursor condition for hypoglycemia, diabetes and heart trouble. One doctor I am aware of www.fibromyalgiatreatment.com believes these conditions can work together to make fibromyalgia worse.

Just recently though I have found out I have a systemic yeast syndrome. In learnining about that, (see www.hufa.org - the yeast link), I found it may contribute to the worsening of my diabetes.

If 75% of the American population is at risk for hyperinsulinemia and that can lead to fibromyalgia - now you know why there are so many people with fibromyalgia.

Wow, I seem to be answering a variant of this question pretty often recently... Here's what works for me. It's not fool proof, I still have bad days, and I still have flares, but it helps. Diet can be crucial. Limit processed foods, sugar, caffeine, etc. Drink plenty of water, eat plenty of fresh fruits and veggies. Supplements help. I take a magnesium/malic acid combo from solaray that does wonders (also has 5htp, valerian root, a nice combo). I take fish oil (1000 mg 3x a day, Pure Encapsulations brand- very high quality and no mercury worries) Happy Campers are great for those days when stress is an issue (they are a life saver some days) Self care is important. Sleep enough, rest enough, take time for yourself. Use heat and ice as often as you feel the need. Check into the Theracane and trigger point workbooks. Massage and chiropractic are lifesavers. Maybe see about getting a portable electric stim machine, mine is enough to keep me mobile some days... Exercise, although painful, is mandatory. Walk, stretch, swim, do Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, maybe even check out the miracle ball, while it's not all that great as an exercise the little balls do a great job of releasing tension from your low back and hips. Stay comfortable. I know I'm beginning to sound like a sales pitch, but MBT shoes are awesome. They are ugly, and unreasonably expensive, but they mean that I can actually go shopping in Target or at the mall and not have to sit down every few minutes. I went to an aquarium recently and didn't have to stop once, it meant a lot to be able to do that. I've actually been able to make it across campus in them without having to stop and rest my back! There are a number of other supplements people recommend, this is just what works for me. *** Edit*** Ramesh1938, you are full of crap. There is no evidence to suggest that Fibromyalgia leads to drug addiction. Fibromyalgia is NOT a symptom of mental anguish or narcissism. It has nothing to do with getting sympathy from others. Please, pull your head out of your behind and go crawl back under your rock.

I happen to believe the cause is dietary. Many, many thousands of people suffer from a little known condition that manifests in way too many ways.

The cause, or causes, of fibromyalgia are still not known. There are a number of theories that have been put forward by researchers. The following are the main candidates.

Viral Infection
Immune or Endocrine System Dysfunction
Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction
Substance P
Candida Overgrowth/Gut Dysbiosis
Physical Injury/Trauma
Accumulation of phosphate due to enzyme deficiency
Chronic Sleep Disorders

In many cases, the cause is Candida - learn more with an internet search on "candida symptoms causes treatment"

Respondent "willow t" has some good points. However, I also think that many physicians miss the mark in their diagnosis. Ten years ago, in Calif, it became the "diagnosis of the year" and everybody had fibromyalgia. Even chiropractors got on the bandwagon, especially in workers' compensation cases. I think the medical opinion from a rheumatologist is the best. Is the government hidiny something? Not in Calif, because the feds have nothing to do with Calif workers' comp. As a former claims adjuster for State Compensation Insurance Fund (SCIF), the largest wc carrier in Calif, I saw fibromyalgia grow from totally unknown, to being fashionable, and heaven knows the current status.

Granted, there may be several thousands of people who really suffer from the symptoms of Fibromyalgia but there is that segment of the population that claim they have it just as an excuse not to get off their lazy asses and get a job. I know several people who collect a hefty SSI check everymonth and their disability claim is that they have F>M> Bull..They get around better than my 73 year old momma ever could and they sure can spend the money going on trips and out partying all nite.
And we wonder why there will be no Social Security when our younger working generation gets old..kick these freeloaders off the SSI roles and make them earn a living like the rest of us..

No .... people have always had aches and pains such as those with "Fibromyalgia" ... as has happened with many things, especially psychological disorders, they just gave it a name, that's all.

probably because its becoming more recognised. years ago, docs covered it up, because there are other illnesses that mimick fibro. just like theres more info about cancers and stuff, fibro is becoming more known, because more people are coming forward. fibro is a rotten illness and can cause a great deal of symptoms. its something that shouldnt be brushed off. and if the gov did something about health funding, more people will have access to treatments!!! but thats just my opinion.
