If so, do they have to file both federal and the state of Minnesota?

I was just a babysitting job - not thru a company.

Assuming that the 14 year old is a dependent of someone, the filing requirement is income of $5000 or more unless they had over $250 in investment income in which case the filing requirement is $800. If the 14 year old had withholding that they would like to recover they may wish to file even if their income is below the amount which would require them to file. These are the Federal rules. I have no information on Minnesota but you should be able to let it from the web.

Strictly speaking, yes you would have to file an income tax return for both federal and for Minnesota. However, I doubt that you made enough money to make it worth the effort to file a tax return.

However, if any taxes were withheld, you should file a tax return to get that money back.

If you had any money withheld for income tax purposes, yes you have to file. If it was less than $500.00, it's hardly worth the trouble, but doing so anyway will help you learn valuable lessons on how to make your way through the complicated process later on when you do begin to earn a better salary. It really is worth the effort and can save you many thousands of dollars over your working lifetime.

Yes. Another example of a time when you must file income tax is when you have a savings account and have earned interest. This is regardless of age.

According to federal law, this person would have to pay taxes depending on the amount they made. If I am not mistaken, if this person earns $1750 or less, they do not even have to report this income. Check www.irs.gov .

Not if its under the table. If they don't mark you on their payroll then they don't report it to the IRS which means they know nothing about you getting paid for anything and do not know that you even worked before. LAst I check you need to be atleast 15 with a workers permit to work.

Your age has nothing to do with it. What's important is how much moolah you made and did anyone deduct taxes from your pay? Most likely, you don't need to, but it depends on those 2 things.
