Well, as long as all that fire and brimstone chat didn't scare you off, I am comfortable sharing with you that I have comunicated my parents who are long passed away.
No, it's not a normal two-way conversation like you'd see in some Hollywood fabrication. And I don't even know if I'm talking to them or my own memory of them, but it brings me peace all the same.
Sometimes I wish I could remember something they'd told me long ago, and suddenly, I'll feel a peace wash over me and the answer to whatever question I had will just come into my mind. And if I get lonely for them, I will feel them there with me, and not sad anymore.
Sure, there are questions I wish I'd asked years ago and will never have the answer, but I'm ok with that. It just feels good to remember the feeling of having one of them beside me for a while. Surely a loving god would not send someone to hell for that.

If you find a medium that's powerful enough to locate a specific spirit. I've never seen it done, but I've heard crazy **** like white noise containing the words of someone who'd been dead for a long time. I found this interesting site. Doesn't sound completely legit, but it gave some insight into this topic... though a tad poorly worded.

You must open your senses. For all you know, they might be trying to contact you. And that "contact" can come in many forms. A particular scent. A specific object suddenly being lost then found again. Just about anything that was once associated with the dead relative in life can manifest in the physical in the present. From there...
There are many tools that are useful in making contact. But I wouldn't dabble in them being a novice like you seem to be. Get a recommendation for a good psychic in your area and see if they can help you.

You really can not. After death the spirit moves on to another plane, sometimes called Summerland, where it prepares for the next incarnation. During this time the spirit is suppossed to let go of attachments to this plane and cleanse itself of memories (for the most part) in order to prepare for it's next incarnation. This is why you can not talk to, channel, or communicate with either your recently departed family members or George Washington for that matter. The people who you have strong attachments to have been in your life in past incarnations and will be again in future reincarnations, so try to understand that for now, you have to let go. These fire and brimstone bullshitters really need to find a good deprogrammer!!!

You cannot while alive. Necromancy... the attempt to speak with the dead is forbidden in the Bible by God because He knows that you will open yourself up to demonic activity. Satan masquarades as an angel of light and I believe he and his demons masquarade as the souls of dead people. He has power, so if you try and do it, you may think you are. But you are being decieved. But I am not God. That is just what I believe.

allow them their rest. nothing but more pain will come from any contact that you try.
if they wish to contact you they will do so probally in a dream or in another very subtile way.
remember them as they were in life, focus on the memories of life and not the pain of death..
i know that it is not what you wanted but it is all that there is.
