I Joined simpley beacuse there was a bad economy, high unemployment rate, I was 19 without any clue as to my future and wasn't getting anywhere staying around my parents house. I Can certainly say, that love of country & Service, the ability to travel the world. All came later in my life. But I stayed 21 years and lovede every minute of it. Would do it all again without hesitation!

I joined the Coast Guard and served ffro 97-02..if I would have known we were going to go into Iraq, I would of re-enlisted for more.

I joined the Coast Guard because at the time they were the only ones seeing actual live action, defending are kids from drugs, which to me is one of the biggest most important roles an adult can take on. I am now in the Border Patrol for the same reason, keeping drugs out of kids hands..I know it is a losing battle, but I would rather try an ddo my part, if my work keeps one kid clean, and alive..I am happy..I am trying to provide the next generation the same oppurtunity that WW2 vets gave me to grow up in a safe world. this country and our way of life are more important than myself,

My parents wanted me to be a lawyer, I wanted to be a surgeon but my parents refused to help pay for anything other then law and the army offered me a way of becoming a surgeon without the huge price tag of studying. The only reason I stay in the army though is because I love the job and I know I'm helping to protect the people and country I love.

Former W Marine.
I wanted to be a Police officer in the area I grew up. My Father objected due to alot of sexual harassment going on there, which I hadn't checked into yet. He was right of course. I too loved my country and decided to join the Marines. To this day I feel Blessed that I did.

It's thing I always wanted to do. I'm sorry I left. Some us still believe in GOD, HONOR, DUTY, COUNTRY. It was the hardest and best thing I did in life. It made me into a adult. I see kids every day on the streets or those in college wasting their lifes in drinking, drugs & crime. All I ever wanted as a kid was to shoot Migs. To bad I never got to fly. The chance to have uncle sam pay for college was secondary. As it turned out I paid anyway.

I joined because I didn't want to go to college, but I wanted to learn a trade that I could use to support my family. I stayed because I enjoyed the work I did and I believe in my Country.

I wanted to go to college and I had no money. I thought the military would be a good way to achieve my goals and do something worthwhile instead of manning a deep-fryer so I gave the Army a shot. Now I am in college ROTC.

My siblings and I are grandchildren of immigrants to the US -- our Father was the first American Born -- and he VOLUNTEERED to serve in WWII -- and ended up a paraplegic. Duty, Honor, Country was what we grew up on and became a great part of our own personalities.

Then, as very young adults, our parents (who were already older when 1st married and late parents) died -- and we HAD to band together, took our service commitments SERIOUSLY, and served in many conflicts, places, situations -- all HONORABLY.

deep down inside most all men born in the USA have a desire to protect on fight for the families, belifes and Country. we get to thinking about our families and what would happen if someone tried to take over and change our ways.......we then decide to join, protect, fight, serve, and even die if that is what it takes to keep our families safe.
as for the female soilders.......i think mainly the same reasons but you will have to ask them......God Bless a lady woh will stand and fight.
