I just found out I'm pregnant with twins. My boyfriend and I are very excited. I was just wanting some different opinions. Do you think that twins should have similar names or should they be completely different?

Congrats on the pregnancy!!!

I would choose different names. They'll be referred to often enough as "The twins" to get sick of it really fast. Avoid same letter names like Jessica & Jennifer or Mark & Michael. That's still too cutesy & they'll hate it later on. As someone suggested, matching outfits are ok once in awhile or for childhood pictures. Give the 2 blue sweaters to one child & do red or green for the other one. If you worry about mixing them up, don't. Each child will be unique in some way & that's how you'll know Jake isn't Steven!

Don't get too carried away with off the wall spelling. Kids LOVE to find pencils, pens, rulers, etc with their names. Odd spellings don't always get printed. I'm an adult & Isabella isn't easy to find. I usually see Isabel, Isabell or Isabelle. While I love my name, it's hard to find on those pre-personalized items. I tend to buy blank pens & put my name on with stickers or something.

The should have different names. They'll hate the idea of similar names. Twins have a hard enough time developing separate identities without everyone expecting them to be the same. Don't make that harder for them.

Give them names that can transition gracefully from childhood to adulthood. They will not be children for ever and it would be disrespectful to give them childish names that do not translate into an adult environment.

For example,

A child can be given the name Julia, but called Julie as a little girl.

It's a personal choice. From my viewpoint, I like it when they have different names that start with the same letter.

Do you know if they are identical or fraternal? If it's boy and girl, something like Sam and Sara.........close but different.

I don't like the rhyming names. I think it's confusing to everyone around them.

Best of health to you on your pregnacy. May all go well and two happy babies come into your life. It's exciting to have one baby so I can't even imagine how much fun it must be to be preparing for two.

God bless.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! thats fantastic news and i wish you all the best for the years ahead.
to answer your question i personally think that although twins they are two seperate identities so i would go 2 names that i love not really caring whether they are similar or not.
and remember even though it is cute as a baby these kids will one day be adults and thier names will still be with them then.

They should be different! And please refrain from dressing them alike (ok, you can do it a few times when they are babies, but then stop! Seriously!) When people name their twins similar names, dress them alike, etc. It doesn't give each twin his/ her own identity. People are especially prone to doing this with identicals. For the sake of your children's mental health, DO NOT name them similar names. They need to be their own person, not "one of the twins"

I don't really have a preference myself. I have twins, a boy and a girl, and their names aren't similar. I did however think that it was cute to have their names start with J and K. If we have another baby it's name will start with either I or L. My step-grandmother wanted me to name them Natalie and Nathan but it was a little cutesy - especially since my last name ends with 'than'.

I think different names are better. I've known twins with similar names and they have seemed slightly embarrassed about it.

I think similar is OK, but not matchey-rhymey...
No Danny and Davey, No Mica an Marcus.
Try to give them names that don't begin with the same first letter.
Don't dress them alike. You will invariably get double matching outfits as gifts. Assign both red sweaters to one son, and both blue sweaters to the other. Allow your children to discover their singularity and uniqueness. There will be enough pressure to be the same without their parents adding to it.

I don't know why, but I like names that are different but sound similar as nicknames. I think I first heard this on the show Rugrats as in Phil and Lil (Phillip and Lillian).

Other possible examples:

Sam and Pam (Samuel/Samantha and Pamela)
Bill and Jill (William and Jillian)
Kat and Pat (Katrina and Patrick/Patricia)

etc.
