My dog has a lot of chew toys: raw hides, bones, squeaky dealies, those rope things you tug at... and yet he continues to chew on video tape covers on the rack, low lying plant leaves, stuff out of the garbage can especially toilet paper, and magazines...how can i get him out of the habit....is it even possible or are dogs just like that...

The things he chews on have been handled by YOU and smell like YOU, the lair-mate and master he loves.

The chew toys you bought for him smell like plastic!

Consider glass covers for your cabinets. Consider putting the plant atop a shelf where he can't get to it. Consider locking him in the bathroom with chew toys whenever you're away from home.

Buy a Nylabone frisbee and a Nylabone "tug toy" and play with your dog with THESE toys specifically. Tire your dog out with that frisbee!

Try spraying the things you don't want him to chew on with Bitter Apple (available at many pet stores). Make his toys more interesting by stuffing his bones with canned food, or something equally appealing. If he's anything like my one year old puppy and thinks it's fun to run away with your things so you will chase him, you may want to put a long leash on him so you can step on it and get whatever it is away from him. Then give him a toy, and praise him if he chews on it.

Also, make sure you exercise him enough. A dog with energy to burn will act up. Have him play fetch, go for runs and walks, swimming, whatever tires him out.

Just a note: I'd be careful giving your dog rawhide - they can swallow large pieces and get all sorts of intestinal problems. A safer alternative is sterilized beef bones (or raw- I personally don't give raw bones, but some people swear by them). NEVER cooked bones, though. Same with rope tugs - if the string is swallowed it can cause health problems. It's mostly a matter of supervision. I'll get off my soapbox now.

All his stuff does'nt smell like you.
try sitting and playing with him while holding his toys.Hold and rub rawhide before and while giving it to him.
That worked to a certain extent for me.Paper was my dogs favorite to shred.that and our eyeglasses which was really upsetting.
My solution was to let him pick out a puppy of his own.He was'nt having any of that till we got the pup home and they bonded within 5 minutes. From that day on neither has chewed anything but each other and their own toys.

confident, I wash my canines' toys particularly often. i take advantage of non-bio gel drugs and a textile softener and that they continuously come out of the bathing gadget finding like new lower back. with the help of the time my canines have dragged all their toys, crammed and rubber toys alike, for the time of the muddy backyard for each week or so, they seem disgusting and besides the undeniable fact that i understand it won't take long till now they're going to get grimy lower back, i've got self assurance happier whilst they have all had a competent wash and sparkling up.

You are just going to have to "baby-proof" your house, just like if you had a curious one year old running around. Put your stuff up! Close the bedroom doors, don't leave your shoes laying around and dump those trash cans or get lids for them. You are tempting him every day and he won't stop. Take his toys and rub them on your body,,,yes, your body...so they pick up the scent of you! Did you ever taste one of those fresh, store-bought toys, they're nasty! If he does things while you are not home, place him in a pet cage. They don't mind being confined, they won't mess in it and they won't be chewing your things...Good Luck!

The best training method is to restrict the dog's opportunity to misbehave in the first place. So, when you are away, or not able to watch him, he has to be confined to a small area with his bedding, water bowl and toys only.

Sounds like my dog when she was a puppy. If your dog is still within a couple of years old, it's habit that he'll grow out of. I don't recall exactly what we did to change this habit except using a "bad dog" voice when we found her doing it.

The dog was introduced to these items before the toys. Spray amonia on things you don't want him to mess with. Don't drench your things, just a little squirt,,,that'll work

try scenting his toys with meat and he will probably leave your stuff alone. The Kong dog toy has a place where you can stuff hamburger meat in it or a little peanut butter
