All cats do that, it's just a reaction for them to have that motion. If you have ever seen a cat go for a "poop" outside they will scratch anything that is around them( the wall, or cement for examples) I have a litter box that is enclosed and my cats scratch the sides of the box. Its normal.

I have a cat who does this too. She'll stay there for a while just scratching the sides of the litter box. I still haven't figured out why they do this.

Don't know, but my cat does the same thing. He scratches the side of his box instead of the litter. Strange.

One of my four cats does this as well. Of course this is the same cat who balances three and sometimes all four feet on the very edge of the litter box to poop. Sometimes cats do weird things for no apparent reason other than they are crazy.

My cat does both of them, she digs in the litter forever, scooping the litter on the floor then she scrapes the sides...i really think the litter box is too small, but they sont sell other sizes anywhere, or atleast i dont know where cuz i have never seen them...i also have a kitten, but she doesnt do that....its just her size

There are glands in a cat's paw (and face among other places) that secret their scent. Cat's are possessive animals. He is likely marking it as his (which he also does just by using it). Big cat's in the wild will not only deficate on their territory but will also mark up trees and such with their claws. I suppose it's a way of writing thieir name on something they feel they own.
