I never thought of Islam as against music and art but when you try to introduce the music and art of another culture to a Muslim country, and with it you try to degrade human decency, as do most music cutures, with the attraction to drugs and indecent behaviour, I think you will meet some opposition that you really deserve.
One must be honest with other people's culture and respect the rights of others to keep out unwanted elements of art and culture that usually lead to a breakdown in common decency.
The West has its own problems with its own art and culture and should not want to pretend that it has not damaged their society, while the Muslim countries were on par with the West in art and culture before the advent of Muhammad, so indecent behaviour is nothing new to the Middle East.
Will non-Muslims begin to see Islam as inevitable when people long to see a clean day when society wants to be purified?
Welcome to the World of Allah. None can stop what Allah wants.

Islam as defined in the Koran *encourages* music and art. There have been times in history that Islamic art and music (and math and astronomy) were the envy of the rest of the world.
However, some fundamentalist sects of Islam carry things too far, make their own rules, and call some art and music "heresy," making them feel justified in killing or jailing or injuring any who practice their banned items. It's fanaticism, not Islam.
Don't get too judgemental, though -- there are plenty of christian sects who ban music, dancing, certain kinds of art...and don't forget christian history, where people were put to death for being accused of witchcraft, for blasphemy, for believing that the earth orbits the sun, etc. Don't throw stones when you live in a glass house :)

My former boss was a Muslim whose family had fled to the U.S. from Iran after the revolution there. I asked her the same question.
It seems that Islam is against any picture of a person or an animal because people might worship it. Plants, inanimate objects, purely geometric shapes, or abstract figures are OK.
Religious music is OK, because prayers are often sung, but secular music is seen as too tempting (according to her, the mullahs are against anything "fun" (her words, not mine), because it might lead to excesses or something else sinful).

music is not forbidden in Islam, only loud obnoxious music is forbidden if the content of the song is profane or it's gonna hurt other people around you.
the Muslims sang all the time during the time of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)
Art is not forbidden in Islam at all unless it offends any one around you.
the only Art that's forbidden is the drawing of Allah or any of his prophets.
simply a warning for people not to get too attached to a painting or an idol that will end up being worshiped instead of Allah.
peace.

some Muslims disagree with all music and all artwork. What about the former copies of Quran richly adorned with works of artwork? you discover lots of them in mmuseums There are historic qurans with pictures depicting Prophet Muhammad, animals, flowers, women folk, adult men, and so on. some qurans even educate Muhammad's face in finished view. also what about music performed at Islamic weddings in Prophet Muhammnad's time? music and artwork were no longer haram, in accordance to Muhammad.

Those aren't real Muslims who do that. The Muslim faith goes deep, and the sane ones believe in beautiful art and music. My boyfriend and his family is Muslim, and they absolutely love music, art, poetry, etc.

do u know that the Quran is actually compiled poetry and when a person reads it, its as beautiful as singing and the meaning goes far deeper and purer than anything else. try listening to it, or just listen to the Prayer call (azan) is enough.
