I have been studying the Quran lately... I would just like to get Non-Muslims opinions about what they think of this verse.

"If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with (rape)her, and they be found; Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days."

I know this is from the Bible. I was just trying to see how many Christians would bash their own holy book. I thought more would play along...but you busted me too quick :)

And it does mean rape. Read the context it is in. Deuteronomy chapter 22.

Why lie about the verse? Its from the Holy Bible, not Qur'an

1 Dt.22:28 If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; 29 Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.

I guess you did what you set out to do....trip up Christians who haven't read their Bibles.

This is like the verses in the Holy Bible. Most men in the Old Testament lay with the women first, then they married them. If they lay with her and didn't take her in marriage, then he owed the father of the woman 50 shekels, which is a great amount of money! So they married them instead! NOT rape, and they didn't have to be found, the woman would testify! Study the last part of the Quran while you're at it and discover how Muhammed tells you to destroy anyone who is not of Islam. Read the contradictions and then come back and tell us how you never want to read what they say again! God Bless.

I think it must be something that was written a very long time ago. Most ancient religions do have some historical passages which show the people making laws to civilize and govern themselves.

There are similar passages in the Christian Holy Bible, listing laws which were man-made, not from God. Their purpose was to show what a mess people could make of things when they added to or subtracted from the laws God gave them.

The new covenant made by Christ cancelled out pretty much everything but the Ten Commandments and the Greatest Commandment by Christ: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

This is also in the Old Testament. It's referring to a time period when marriage for women was often a matter of life and death, eating or not eating. If a woman had been raped, she wouldn't have been as likely to marry afterward. This is a law that would deter men from rape with the consequences of having to take care of that woman for the rest of his life. It's not excusing rape, it's similar to life imprisonment in our time. If you murder someone you face life in prison. Just because a punishment has been set in stone doesn't mean that the crime is lessoned.

Jewish law was that way. I know nothing about the Quran and don't want to know. However, you need to stick to what you believe, because confusion is the work of the devil.
Rape is not respected in this country. It is looked at as offensive to all women. That was then, we live now in 21st Century. Now, there is only one God. There are so many religions, denominations of religious sects. Yet, there is only one God. The head of the Trinity.

Well, the verse you read was created by man. Spread by word of mouth by man, and rewritten after century after century by man. Man is fallable. There are many flaws within religious texts most contradicting themselves at a later date. I suggest physics, biology, and chemistry books for truth and reason. Respect, Understand, and accept the universe we are apart of. You're only on this earth 60-80 years. Put your mind to use instead filling it with delusions mankind has created.
But by all means be a good person. To yourself and to others.

thanks for listening

The same thing is in the Bible!

this rule is to tell the man that if he takes a woman's virginity then he is responsible for her. the term rape here is used very loosely. if we had the same code today, then there would be much less STDs floating around. This just is to show that according to God or Allah (same Deity, btw) that promicsuity is a sin. that man and woman ae to fornicate only under marriage.

But i'm atheist, this is Your god who is telling his followers, he says that those who love him will go to heaven, another place says that if you love Him you will keep his commandments.

ADDED: Barbara, the Quaran says to detroy those who are not monotheistic. so anyone who is Christian, Jewish, or Muslim is not supposed to be destroyed. In the old testiment it says you are not to suffer a witch to live. so these three religions are very closely related, no matter what "fault" you find in one, you will most likely find in all three

When the two join, they become one flesh. Were you really reading the Q'ran, or were you reading Dueteronomy 22:28? The wording is identical to what you wrote. Are you trying to trick some good Christians?

I think that is in the Bible...

Hmmmm... and where did you get the "(rape)" part?...

So, you have sex with a woman who is a virgin and she is not betrothed... then you have to support her for the rest of your life.. and if you forced yourself onto her .. or raped her.. just how well do you think that she is going to treat YOU?

Reading this for the first time, I see it as you can't just abandon a women whom you've wronged like that. In a way, it's noble. Plus, in many other laws around that time the woman would have just been stoned to death or left to suffer alone.
